Tokyo-based developer Bexide has announced a June 25 release date for NAMCO LEGENDARY Mountains, a 3D voxel puzzle game coming to Steam, Nintendo Switch, and the Nintendo Switch 2. Pre-orders are live today on the Nintendo eShop with a 10 percent discount that runs through July 8.

The core concept takes classic 1980s Namco arcade sprites and extrudes them into 3D voxels. You throw these voxel capsules onto floating disks in a virtual space. Combining identical characters evolves them into larger pieces. This triggers chains and builds your high score.

The transition from 2D sprites to 3D voxels is a familiar trick for retro revivals. We saw it years ago with 3D Dot Game Heroes on the PlayStation 3. Here, the voxel approach serves a mechanical purpose. The physics engine needs physical volume to calculate how these characters bounce and roll off each other when they hit the disk.

The mechanics draw obvious inspiration from modern physics puzzlers like Suika Game. Players have to manage the physical space on the disk before the pile grows too tall and everything spills over the edge.

Five classic arcade themes

The main mode mashes up various Namco properties into a single pile. The game also includes five dedicated stages built around individual arcade releases. You get levels themed after Pac-Man, Dig Dug, Xevious, Mappy, and The Tower of Druaga. Each stage includes rearranged music pulling from the original arcade sound chips.

The Tower of Druaga is a deep cut for a modern puzzle game. The 1984 action role-playing game is infamous for its cryptic secrets and punishing difficulty.

A hundred voxels to hoard

Unlocking new voxels requires clearing in-game conditions. There are over 100 different voxel models to collect. You can bring these unlocked characters into the main stage to customize your puzzle pieces.

Bexide also built a Collection Room mode where you can arrange your unlocked characters in custom dioramas. It is basically a virtual shelf for digital plastic toys. You can recreate scenes from the original arcade games or build weird crossover displays.

From the team behind Fruit Mountain

Bexide has a long history of making quirky puzzle games. They are best known in Japan as the original creators of Sony's Doko Demo Issyo series and its mascot Toro Inoue. More recently, they developed the deck-building roguelite Super Bullet Break and the fruit-stacking puzzle game Fruit Mountain.

NAMCO LEGENDARY Mountains is a mechanical successor to Fruit Mountain. In that previous game, players dropped fruit onto a ceramic plate using a notoriously bouncy physics engine. If Bexide carries those same physics over to this new release, keeping a stack of round Pac-Man ghosts on a flat disk will be difficult.

The Switch versions cost 2,480 yen (roughly $16), according to Bexide. The current pre-order discount drops that to 2,232 yen. The Steam version supports both Windows and Mac. All platforms include global online leaderboards for score attacks. The explicit mention of the Nintendo Switch 2 alongside the original Switch is also a nice confirmation that the game will be ready for Nintendo's next hardware right out of the gate.
