Konami shows off MGS4 and Peace Walker in the new Master Collection preview
Dengeki Online posted 14 minutes of gameplay from the upcoming compilation, giving us a look at the long-awaited PS3 escape.
Japanese outlet Dengeki Online posted a 14-minute gameplay preview of Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 today. The footage gives a clear look at the first-ever modern port of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, alongside the HD Edition of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker.
The Master Collection series is Konami's ongoing project to bring the entire Metal Gear catalog to current hardware. This second volume picks up where the October 2023 release of Vol. 1 left off. Konami originally announced Vol. 2 during a Sony State of Play broadcast on February 13, 2026. The compilation launches on August 27, 2026. It costs $49.99 and is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam. Standard physical editions will be available alongside the digital storefront releases.
Trapped on the PS3 since 2008
The main draw of this package is Metal Gear Solid 4. The game launched on June 12, 2008. Kojima Productions built it entirely around the PlayStation 3's complex Cell Broadband Engine. Because of that proprietary architecture, the game stayed locked to that single console for 18 years. Emulation efforts on PC have made progress over the last decade, but this release is the first time the conclusion to Solid Snake's story has been playable natively on modern systems.
The Dengeki preview video shows the game running smoothly. It highlights the OctoCamo stealth mechanics, the over-the-shoulder aiming system, and the lengthy cinematic cutscenes that defined the original release. The original PS3 version relied heavily on the DualShock 3's pressure-sensitive face buttons for aiming and close-quarters combat. Konami had to remap those inputs for modern controllers that only use digital face buttons. The port appears to maintain the visual style of the PS3 original without attempting a full graphical overhaul.
Mother Base and digital books
The collection also includes Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. The footage shows the HD Edition, which originally launched in 2011 for the PS3 and Xbox 360 after the game's initial PlayStation Portable release. Peace Walker introduced the base-building and soldier recruitment mechanics that later formed the foundation of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. I am curious to see how the cooperative multiplayer holds up on modern network infrastructure, as the original relied heavily on ad-hoc and early PSN matchmaking.
Beyond the core games, the video previews the digital bonus materials. The package includes comprehensive Master Books and Scenario Books. These digital archives contain full scripts, lore breakdowns, and behind-the-scenes production details. Konami also included a modern restoration of the Metal Gear Solid 4 Database, an encyclopedic app that originally required a separate download from the PlayStation Store.
The Game Boy Color spin-off
The 2000 Game Boy Color title Metal Gear: Ghost Babel rounds out the package as a digital bonus. Ghost Babel is a non-canon alternate sequel to the original MSX Metal Gear. It adapted the stealth mechanics of the PlayStation games to an 8-bit handheld format with surprising success. Including it here bridges a gap for players who missed out on the physical cartridge over two decades ago.
