iam8bit has announced that a PEGI-rated Collector's Edition of Moomintroll: Winter's Warmth is coming to select Nordic retailers. Pre-orders open today. The physical release is scheduled to ship on October 16. This brings Hyper Games' winter adventure to local shelves in the region where Tove Jansson's characters originated.

According to iam8bit, this PEGI version will be distributed through select retail partners in the Nordics. The boutique publisher previously revealed standard and Collector's Editions for the PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch back in May. Those direct-to-consumer sales often rely on ESRB ratings and international shipping. Setting up a dedicated regional release makes the physical package much easier to acquire for European fans.

I think Hyper Games has a perfect handle on the melancholic but cozy tone of these books. It makes complete sense to ensure the Nordic region gets a proper localized physical release for the follow-up.

What comes in the box

The Collector's Edition bundles the physical game with a 172-page hardcover artbook. It also includes two enamel pins, a keychain, a tote bag, sticker sheets, and a digital code for the game's soundtrack. The PlayStation 5 version puts the game on a disc. The Switch version uses a standard cartridge.

Physical media collectors often have to import these kinds of boutique releases from the United States. That usually means paying high shipping costs and dealing with customs fees. A local retail presence in the Nordics bypasses those hurdles. It also ensures the box art carries the familiar PEGI rating logo that European collectors expect on their shelves.

A Norwegian studio's take on a Finnish classic

Moomintroll: Winter's Warmth originally launched digitally in April 2026 for PC and the Nintendo Switch. Hyper Games designed it as a spiritual successor to Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley. The two games share a similar art style and puzzle-adventure framework. They focus on different characters and seasons to tell a new story.

Hyper Games is an independent development studio based in Oslo, Norway. They have built a strong reputation for adapting licensed properties with care. Before taking on the Moomin universe, they developed titles like Mørkredd, a cooperative puzzle game built around shadows and light. Mørkredd was a darker, more abstract experience. Their transition to the colorful storybook world of Tove Jansson's creations has been highly successful. Snufkin won several awards for its art direction and audio design. Moomintroll: Winter's Warmth continues that trend with a similarly lush audiovisual presentation.

Waking up early for winter

The plot begins when Moomintroll wakes up early from his winter hibernation. He finds Moominvalley covered in frost and completely unrecognizable. The familiar green landscapes are gone, replaced by snowbanks and frozen rivers. The gameplay revolves around exploring this cold landscape and meeting new friends. Players must solve environmental puzzles to help the local inhabitants survive the harsh weather. It is a slower and more introspective game than its predecessor.

I appreciate that Hyper Games avoided making a direct sequel. Switching the perspective to Moomintroll and changing the season to winter gives the developers room to explore themes of loneliness and community. The puzzles rely on finding tools and interacting with the cozy surroundings to overcome the Lady of the Cold's frosty veil.

The October 16 shipping date puts the physical release right on the edge of actual winter. This feels appropriate for a game entirely focused on surviving the cold. The digital version is already out on Steam and the Switch.
