Capcom revealed the latest story trailer and new promotional art for Monster Hunter Stories 3: The Fated Twin Dragons during a stage presentation at Monster Hunter Festa '26. The real-world event took place today in Japan. It gave fans a final look at the RPG before its scheduled release on March 13, 2026.

According to 4Gamer, the presentation included a video introducing the game's development team alongside the new story footage. The newly unveiled promotional art highlights the "Fated Twin Dragons" subtitle. It shows off the central monsters that will drive the plot.

Turn-based combat instead of action

The Stories spin-off series has always occupied a weird, charming space in the broader Monster Hunter franchise. The mainline games focus on action combat, stamina management, and turning giant reptiles into stylish hats. The Stories games pivot to a traditional turn-based RPG format.

You play as a Rider instead of a Hunter. You hatch and raise monsters (called Monsties in the game's localized terminology) to fight alongside you. The combat relies on a rock-paper-scissors system of Power, Speed, and Technical attacks. It is a formula that borrows heavily from monster-catching games like Pokémon but wraps it in the familiar crafting loops of the Capcom universe.

The first game launched on the Nintendo 3DS in 2016. It was a late-era release for the handheld that eventually found a larger audience through mobile ports and a recent HD remaster. Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin followed on the Switch and PC in 2021. That sequel expanded the scope of the world and refined the battle system.

Three weeks until launch

This third entry arrives at an interesting time for Capcom. The publisher is currently riding high on the massive success of Monster Hunter Wilds. Releasing a colorful, story-driven RPG spin-off right in the middle of that action-heavy hype cycle is a bold scheduling choice.

The visual style continues the cel-shaded anime aesthetic established by the first two games. This look helps separate the Stories timeline from the hyper-realistic environments of the mainline series. It also allows the hardware to render massive, flashy special attacks without dropping frames.

We have all been there: staring at a massive backlog of 100-hour RPGs, wondering where it all went wrong, and then buying another one anyway.

Live from the Festa '26 stage

The Monster Hunter Festa events are Capcom's dedicated fan conventions. They usually focus on time-attack tournaments for the mainline games, developer panels, and exclusive merchandise sales. Using the main stage to push the narrative elements of Stories 3 makes sense for a game that relies heavily on its plot and character interactions.

The 4Gamer report notes that the development team used their stage time to explain the core appeal of the new title. The "Twin Dragons" aspect of the story appears to focus on two contrasting elder dragons. This is a common narrative trope in the series that usually ends with the player having to craft armor out of both of them.

The game launches on March 13.
