Monster Hunter Festa '26 is taking over Makuhari Messe this Sunday

Capcom's Monster Hunter Festa '26 is scheduled to be held on Sunday, February 22, 2026, at the Makuhari Messe convention center in Chiba, Japan. The offline fan event runs from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM in Halls 2 and 3. According to Game Watch Impress.

I wish I knew about this event earlier. I also wish I was in Japan for it! I'm not deserving though. The last Monster Hunter game I played was Monster Hunter 4.

The Monster Hunter franchise has come a long way since its 2004 debut on the PlayStation 2. What started as a notoriously difficult action RPG about turning giant dinosaurs into stylish hats has ballooned into a global juggernaut. Following the massive crossover success of Monster Hunter: World in 2018, the series has pushed past 100 million units sold worldwide. Capcom now uses these offline festivals to gather the Japanese community, host tournaments, and distribute exclusive merchandise.

Before the series exploded on modern consoles, Monster Hunter built its foundation on portable hardware. The franchise essentially kept the PlayStation Portable alive in Japan during the late 2000s. Local ad-hoc multiplayer became a cultural phenomenon. Players gathered in parks, cafes, and train stations to hunt together. The games have since transitioned back to high-end home consoles and PCs, but events like Festa '26 keep that original spirit of in-person cooperative play alive.

Halls 2 and 3 at Makuhari Messe

Makuhari Messe is the standard venue for massive Japanese gaming gatherings. The convention center opened in 1989 and regularly hosts the Tokyo Game Show, Jump Festa, and the Tokyo Auto Salon. Securing two main halls means Capcom is expecting a massive turnout of players carrying their handhelds and hunting in local co-op groups.

The main draw for competitive players is the Hunting King Championship 2026. The semifinals and finals will take place live on stage. These tournaments are a staple of Monster Hunter events, requiring teams of two to clear specific arena quests using preset equipment loadouts. It requires absolute precision, as the winning times are usually separated by fractions of a second.

Wilds and Stories 3 take the stage

This year's festival leans heavily into Capcom's current and upcoming software lineup. Monster Hunter Wilds, which launched on February 28, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, has a major presence. The game shifted the series toward dynamic, ever-changing environments, and Capcom is still riding that wave. Suzuki is even exhibiting custom vehicles themed around Wilds right on the show floor.

Fans of the turn-based spin-off series also have something to look forward to. Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twin Fates is confirmed to have its own dedicated stage presentation during the event. The Stories sub-series diverges completely from the main games, focusing on monster raising and traditional RPG combat rather than real-time action. It is a much different pace, but it has carved out a dedicated audience over the last few years.

Capcom usually brings a mix of plushies, apparel, and limited-edition acrylic stands to these festivals, many of which never see an official online release.
