Monster Crown: Sin Eater is getting a physical PS5 release

Studio Aurum's upcoming monster-taming sequel, Monster Crown: Sin Eater, is getting a physical PlayStation 5 release through Red Art Games. The game launches digitally across PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on April 30. The physical PS5 edition follows on July 2.

The original Monster Crown released in 2021 as a darker, more complex alternative to traditional monster catchers. It began as a Kickstarter project in 2018 and eventually built a dedicated audience, though it suffered from a rough launch window full of performance issues. Studio Aurum has expanded its team for the sequel to avoid those same pitfalls. Series creator Jason Walsh and director APE-AHAB are aiming to push the monster-taming concept further with a new protagonist and a massive roster of creatures.

A hostile world

You play as Asur. He is a farm boy who gets dragged into a conflict with the Crown Nation government after his family is threatened. His ultimate goal is to take down Lord Taishakuten and the ruling Holy Order. The story leans into a hostile, cowboy-movie tone where player choices actually dictate the outcome. You can play as a virtuous hero or make questionable deals to get ahead. The narrative has branching dialogue paths that alter how the campaign unfolds.

The overworld exploration requires constant attention. Monsters behave differently depending on their species and temperament. Some run away when you approach. Others will actively stalk you from the shadows. You have to watch your back to avoid an ambush. The environments are entirely handled by artist Arex, backed by a new soundtrack directed by Onion_mu.

True crossbreeding

The main draw is the crossbreeding system. Instead of simple palette swaps, the game uses a Genome Editor to fuse creatures. Studio Aurum brought in artist RacieB to build over 1,000 base monster sprites for this system. Developer Kyle Toom handled the underlying fusion mechanics.

Combat remains a core focus. The game uses a deep turn-based system with multiple difficulty settings. When you combine monsters, the resulting offspring inherits specific physical traits and elemental affinities from both parents. You can also trigger elemental transformations using specific items in the game world. Once a monster transforms, you can crossbreed those new forms to create even more combinations. Tracking down every possible hybrid will take completionists a massive amount of time.

The physical release

Red Art Games is handling the console ports for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions. They are also producing the physical PS5 version for European distribution. The physical box includes a copy of the game and a printed poster featuring the game's key art.

Collectors looking to secure a copy can place a pre-order through the Red Art Games store. If you just want to test the crossbreeding mechanics before committing to a purchase, Studio Aurum has a free demo available on Steam right now.
