Mistfall Hunter just added a heavy-armored class called the Withered Knight to its current open beta across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.

The new class wields a two-handed greatsword and focuses on a sigil-and-detonation combat loop. Players can mark enemies with Withering Sigils and then trigger a Reckoning ability to detonate them for burst damage. The class relies heavily on patient spacing and reading enemy movements due to the greatsword's long reach.

Defense comes from a strict, timing-based parry system. Missing the parry window leaves the knight open to heavy damage, but landing it successfully flips the momentum of an exchange. The Withered Knight also has a grappling skill called Thorn Guide. This allows players to drag enemies out of formation. The move makes it easier for teammates to pick off isolated targets.

In the game's lore, these warriors were once the ceremonial Rose Knights of the Kingdom of Gaenaria. They are now exiles cast out to the North. They fight with worn armor and a shattered sense of honor. The Withered Knight joins an existing roster of five other classes: the Mercenary, Sorcerer, Blackarrow, Shadowstrix, and Seer.

Surviving the Gyldenmist

Developed by Bellring Games and published by Skystone Games, Mistfall Hunter is a third-person PvPvE extraction action RPG. The game takes place in Weavereach, a dark fantasy world ruined by a catastrophic war between gods. The spilled blood of the fallen deities created the Gyldenmist, a corrupting fog that spreads madness across the land.

Players take on the role of Gyldhunters. These warriors are resurrected by a mysterious girl named Dew, who holds a fragment of the Fate Goddess. You can dive into the mist solo or form a three-player squad to hunt corroded monsters, gather Gyldenblood, and fight rival players for their loot.

The extraction loop is unforgiving. Death in the mist means losing all your gathered gear and spoils. Surviving requires finding a rare monster called a Returner Woodling. Defeating this creature drops an item called a Soul of Return, which players must use to secure an extraction back to their safe camp.

Combat and customization

The combat system emphasizes deliberate action over mindless hacking. Players use a free-aim system to target specific weak points on enemies. Each class can master two unique weapon stances, and players can seamlessly swap fighting styles mid-battle to adapt to different threats.

Beyond the base classes, the game has deep customization options. Players can tailor their loadouts using expansive talent trees, dozens of rare gem affixes, and a wide array of active skills. The developers want players to break free from rigid class restraints. This opens up builds focused on relentless assault, elusive maneuvering, or unyielding defense.

The road to launch

The open beta began on June 14 and runs until June 22. Players can test the full roster of classes (including the new Withered Knight) and experience the complete three-player co-op extraction loop before the final release.

Mistfall Hunter officially launches on July 29 for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Microsoft has confirmed the game will also be available on Xbox Game Pass on day one.

The dark fantasy extraction genre is getting crowded, but Bellring Games is betting heavily on fluid melee combat to stand out. I am curious to see if the Withered Knight's sigil mechanics and parry systems hold up against aggressive rival squads when the servers are fully loaded.
