MiSTer's physical CD support update adds automatic disc detection

One extra step for Companion users
According to Anime0t4ku's release notes, the automatic detection system currently requires one extra manual step to function properly. That temporary requirement will be automated in an upcoming update to the MiSTer Companion app. Until then, the core handles the heavy lifting of recognizing when a disc is inserted and spinning it up for the active console core.
Earlier versions of the fork required players to manually initialize the drive every time they swapped a game. Version 2.2.0 removes most of that friction. The system now detects the media swap automatically, which makes the experience feel much closer to using an original console.
Playing real PlayStation and Saturn discs
The MiSTer project historically relied entirely on digital backups. If you wanted to play a Sega CD or Neo Geo CD game, you needed to rip the disc to an ISO or CHD file and store it on an SD card. The base MiSTer software simply did not know how to talk to an external optical drive.
Anime0t4ku's custom fork changes that pipeline. It routes physical USB drive data directly into the FPGA cores. The software currently supports the PlayStation, Sega CD, TurboGrafx-CD, and Sega Saturn cores. It also handles Red Book audio playback, meaning games that stream music directly off the CD track will play correctly without stuttering or dropping channels.
This setup bypasses software emulation completely. The FPGA chip recreates the original console hardware at the transistor level. The physical drive feeds it data exactly as the original laser assembly would have. It gives players a way to use their existing physical collections without relying on aging 30-year-old laser diodes that are prone to failure.
An alternative to the Analogue Duo
Hardware-level physical media playback is usually restricted to dedicated commercial products. Devices like the Analogue Duo or the upcoming Retro Remake SuperStation ONE require you to buy a separate machine for specific console ecosystems. The Analogue Duo only plays TurboGrafx and PC Engine games.
The USB drive integration turns a standard MiSTer into a universal disc player for any supported CD-based console. Alexey Melnikov originally built the MiSTer project around the Terasic DE10-Nano board in 2017 to consolidate arcade and console hardware into one device. Adding physical media support pushes that original goal even further.
