MiSTer Companion Mobile v4.0.0 hits Google Play with Zaparoo integration

Developer Anime0t4ku has submitted MiSTer Companion Mobile v4.0.0 to Google Play, bringing a major UI refresh and direct Zaparoo launching to the Android management app. According to the developer's update announcement, the new version aligns the mobile application's Update_All sources with the desktop release and improves layouts for smaller screens.

The MiSTer FPGA project relies on the Terasic DE10-Nano board to recreate classic arcade and console hardware at the silicon level. Unlike software emulators that run on standard operating systems, the MiSTer uses Field-Programmable Gate Arrays to mimic the original circuitry of systems like the Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, and hundreds of arcade boards. This cycle-accurate approach eliminates software latency, but it also makes the hardware notoriously technical to configure.

Because managing the system historically required terminal commands, SSH scripts, and manually editing configuration files, community developers built graphical interfaces to handle the heavy lifting. MiSTer Companion started as a free, open-source desktop utility for network management and script execution. The mobile version launched in May 2026 as a paid application to help fund the broader open-source ecosystem.

Launching games with physical cards

The standout addition in version 4.0.0 is the integration of MiSTerZine and Zaparoo. Zaparoo is an open-source framework created by developer wizzo (originally under the name TapTo) that lets users boot games using physical objects. Players can write data to NFC cards, scan QR codes, or use custom RFID tags to trigger game launches. The background service maps those physical tokens directly to ROMs or FPGA cores on the MiSTer hardware.

MiSTerZine, created by Matija Erceg in mid-2026, acts as a massive interactive index for the platform. It tracks release dates, hardware specifications, and screenshots for over 1,000 arcade titles and console cores. By linking these two tools inside the mobile app, users can browse the MiSTerZine database on their phone and trigger a game launch directly on their television without touching a controller.

Synchronizing the update scripts

The update also addresses basic usability. The interface refresh targets small-screen layouts, making it easier to navigate the app's menus on a phone rather than a tablet.

More importantly, the Update_All script sources are now fully synchronized with the desktop application. The Update_All script is the backbone of the MiSTer ecosystem, automatically downloading new arcade cores, fetching required BIOS files, and organizing the SD card file structure. Ensuring the mobile app pulls from the exact same repositories as the desktop version prevents version mismatches and broken core dependencies.
