The Minecraft movie sequel just got a title and a 2027 release date

Mojang has officially titled the sequel to the Minecraft movie. The follow-up is called A Minecraft Movie Squared, and it brings back Jack Black and Jason Momoa for a Summer 2027 theatrical release. The title and casting details were announced during the May 2026 Minecraft Live broadcast, which also outlined a plan to put player-made creations directly into the upcoming film.

Kirsten Dunst is joining the cast to play Alex. Matt Berry is also on board in an undisclosed role. It has been suggested that costume design will be used to strictly differentiate the characters.

Berry's involvement suggests a very particular comedic tone for the sequel. He is best known for his bombastic, theatrical delivery in shows like What We Do in the Shadows and The IT Crowd. Dropping his comedic style into a voxel-based universe alongside Jack Black guarantees at least a few high-energy line deliveries.

Four biomes and a cape

The broadcast dedicated a large chunk of time to a new community Build Challenge. Mojang is hosting a competition where players build structures in a custom map designed for the event. Chief Creative Officer Jens Bergensten explained that the development team selected four biomes relevant to the movie's plot. These biomes serve as the foundation for the custom map and are meant to inspire the community's architecture.

Everyone who participates in the event earns a special cape for their in-game avatar. The actual winners get a much bigger prize. The winning builds will appear either in the movie itself or during the end credits.

From default skin to Hollywood

The casting of Kirsten Dunst as Alex highlights how much lore has been extracted from a game that originally had none. Alex was introduced to the PC version of Minecraft back in 2014. The character was created simply to give players a default avatar with slightly thinner arms, serving as a counterpart to the original Steve model. Seeing a default player skin elevated to a named protagonist played by an Academy Award nominee is a fascinating trajectory for a survival sandbox.

Minecraft Live has historically been the venue for major mob votes and biome updates. Shifting the focus to a Hollywood production shows how much the franchise's center of gravity has moved beyond just Java and Bedrock edition patch notes.

This cinematic push aligns with Microsoft and Mojang's broader strategy for the property. The core game remains a juggernaut, but the official Minecraft site now hosts a sprawling portfolio. The franchise has expanded into the dungeon crawler space with Minecraft Dungeons, tackled action-strategy with Minecraft Legends, and built a massive presence in classrooms via Minecraft Education. A theatrical universe is just the next logical pillar.
