SNK has confirmed that the upcoming Metal Slug Ultimate Collection will receive a physical edition. The developer announced the news on September 17, responding directly to community feedback following the compilation's initial reveal earlier this month. I love physical collecting, so seeing a massive 10-game retro compilation secure a spot on a real shelf is great news. Digital storefronts are convenient, but having a permanent disc or cartridge for arcade history guarantees you can play it long after servers shut down.

When Metal Slug Ultimate Collection was first announced on September 9, the package bundles ten titles from the long-running run-and-gun franchise. It includes mainline entries from Metal Slug 1 through Metal Slug 7, the 2004 Game Boy Advance spin-off, and an unreleased arcade Location Test build. This prototype version has never been officially available to the public before, making it a major draw for preservationists. The collection is being handled by retro porting specialists M2. It is scheduled to launch in 2027 across PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and the Nintendo Switch 2.

Addressing the missing game

When the 10-game lineup was revealed, players immediately noticed a gap in the roster. Metal Slug XX was missing from the list. Originally released in 2009 for the PlayStation Portable, Metal Slug XX is an expanded version of Metal Slug 7. It added co-op multiplayer and introduced King of Fighters guest character Leona Heidern to the playable roster. Because it is widely considered the definitive version of the seventh game, its absence stood out.

In an official statement posted to Twitter, the development team acknowledged the omission. They noted that they are currently exploring ongoing efforts regarding Metal Slug XX. They didn't specify whether the game will be patched into the Ultimate Collection, offered as downloadable content, or released as a standalone product. The team simply stated that their battle is far from over.

Thirty years of arcade history

The Metal Slug series started in April 1996 on the Neo Geo arcade hardware. Originally developed by Nazca Corporation before the studio fully merged into SNK, the games are famous for their incredibly detailed pixel art, fluid character animations, and chaotic vehicle transformations. Mainline installments like Metal Slug X and Metal Slug 3 remain arcade classics. They set a high bar for 2D action games that very few developers have managed to match since. The slapstick humor and punishing difficulty curve kept players feeding quarters into Neo Geo MVS cabinets throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Getting ten of these games in one package for the franchise's 30th anniversary is a huge undertaking. Having M2 at the helm is the most important detail here. The studio has a strong track record with arcade ports, meaning the emulation quality for the Neo Geo titles should be excellent. I'm particularly interested to see how they handle the Game Boy Advance hardware for Metal Slug Advance, since that game runs on completely different architecture than the arcade releases.

The compilation doesn't have a firm 2027 release date yet. Details on who will distribute the physical edition are also still pending. I'm curious to see if SNK handles the physical run internally or partners with a boutique distributor. Either way, securing a physical copy of the Location Test build alone makes the disc worth picking up.
