Mega Man and Proto Man team up in the first Dual Override gameplay trailer
Capcom just dropped the first look at gameplay for its 2027 platformer, revealing a playable Proto Man, customizable ability chips, and a new boss.
Capcom has released the first gameplay trailer for Mega Man: Dual Override, highlighting active side-scrolling combat, a playable Proto Man, and a new boss named Twinkle Girl. The game was originally announced back in December 2025 at The Game Awards, but this is the first time anyone outside Capcom has seen it in motion. It launches in 2027 across almost every active platform: PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, the upcoming Switch 2, and PC.
Custom chips and missing doctors
The plot setup sticks strictly to the established franchise formula. Dr. Light is missing, and robots are actively destroying a public Robot exhibition. Mega Man has to step in and fix the mess. This time around, he actually has backup. Proto Man is fully playable, bringing cooperative mechanics to a series that usually isolates you against overwhelming odds.
The combat relies on a 2.5D visual style that keeps the action on a flat plane while using 3D models for the characters and environments. It looks like a direct evolution of the art style Capcom used for Mega Man 11 back in 2018. Capcom is introducing two major mechanical changes to the standard run-and-gun loop. Players can now equip Custom Chips to modify their abilities on the fly. This sounds a lot like the customization systems found in the Battle Network spin-offs, just applied to a traditional action platformer.
There is also a new Override system. Triggering this state grants a temporary burst of overwhelming power to help clear out tougher screens. The transformation sequence is flashy, completely changing Mega Man's armor mid-jump.
I am curious to see how the co-op integration affects the level design. Traditional Mega Man stages are tightly tuned for a single player's jump arc and weapon loadout. Adding a second player could easily break that careful balance. Capcom might have to build wider, more chaotic arenas just to give both characters enough room to operate. If you prefer to play alone, it isn't yet clear whether the AI takes over the second character or if you can simply run the stages solo.
Meet Twinkle Girl
Twinkle Girl is the first newly revealed Robot Master for the game. Her boss fight takes place in a space-themed arena, complete with a traditional splash screen introduction. Her design is deceptively cheerful for a machine trying to murder you. We don't know what weapon you get for defeating her, but a space-themed boss usually yields some kind of gravity manipulation or a screen-clearing laser attack.
The official website is now live, though it mostly just hosts the new footage and some basic character art. The copyright markers confirm Capcom is pushing this as a major 2027 release.
We are still a long way from 2027, but the core mechanics look solid. Giving players temporary power states and customizable chips suggests a faster, more aggressive approach to the usual gameplay loop. It's a welcome shift for a franchise that has spent the last few years relying heavily on legacy collections and minor re-releases.
