Marvel is reprinting its 1980s Indiana Jones comics in two massive hardcovers

Marvel is releasing two deluxe hardcovers this September that collect the entire 1980s run of Indiana Jones comics. The collections, titled Indiana Jones: The Further Adventures Book I and Indiana Jones: The Further Adventures Book II, bundle the original comic adaptations of Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. They also include all 34 issues of The Further Adventures of Indiana Jones, a monthly series that ran from 1983 to 1986.

The physical presentation leans heavily into the archival vibe. Both books come with leatherette binding, debossed cover designs, and ribbon bookmarks. It makes a comic omnibus look like a prop journal you might find sitting on a dusty desk in a university archaeology department.

Both are is available for preorder through Penguin Random House.

34 issues and three movies

Book I contains the adaptations of Raiders and Temple of Doom (originally published as Marvel Super Specials #18 and #30), plus issues #1 through #16 of the Further Adventures ongoing series. The first volume alone clocks in at 528 pages.

Book II wraps up the collection with the four-issue Last Crusade adaptation and issues #17 through #34 of the ongoing book.

Comic writers in the 1970s and 1980s usually had to work from early shooting scripts to get the books printed in time for the theatrical premiere. This means the comic versions often include weird deleted scenes, alternate dialogue, or bizarre pacing choices that never made it into the final film cut.

A ridiculous roster of creators

The talent involved in these 1980s books is staggering. The credits list includes Walter Simonson, John Byrne, Archie Goodwin, Howard Chaykin, David Michelinie, and David Mazzucchelli.

The Further Adventures gave these creators room to build out the Indiana Jones mythos beyond the movies. The stories are pure pulp action. Indy fights pirates, explores lost cities, and deals with occult artifacts on a monthly schedule. John Byrne was at the height of his powers during this era, and Walter Simonson was busy redefining Thor around the exact same time. Seeing them tackle a pure pulp adventure hero is a great snapshot of 1980s comic history.

The licensing circle of life

These comics have been out of print for a long time. Dark Horse Comics held the Indiana Jones license for decades, producing their own excellent original stories and miniseries throughout the 1990s and 2000s. Because Dark Horse held the rights, the original Marvel run sat in a vault.

Now that Disney owns both Marvel and Lucasfilm, the publishing rights are back where they started. This corporate synergy finally allows Marvel to reprint their original 1980s material without navigating a legal minefield.

Both volumes arrive on September 29, 2026. You will need a sturdy shelf.
