Marvel Tōkon just added Peni Parker and Star-Lord
Arc System Works has revealed the Amazing Guardians team for its upcoming 4v4 Marvel fighting game, which launches this August.
Arc System Works has announced the "Amazing Guardians" team for Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls. The latest roster update adds Spider-Man, Ms. Marvel, Star-Lord, and Peni Parker to the 4v4 fighting game. The title launches on August 6, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.
The new characters rely heavily on tag-team mechanics to swap in for assists and combo extensions. Spider-Man uses his traditional web-swinging mobility, while Ms. Marvel attacks with giant embiggened fists. Star-Lord fights with his rocket boots and blasters. The newly revealed "Middle of Knowhere" stage has a giant Celestial head in the background, a shift from the urban cityscapes seen in previous updates.
The development team at Arc System Works is leaning heavily into the 2.5D anime aesthetic they popularized with Dragon Ball FighterZ and Guilty Gear Strive. This visual style is especially obvious when Peni Parker's SP//dr mech drops a screen-filling purple energy attack. Peni is a relatively rare pick for fighting games, but producer Takeshi Yamanaka has previously stated the studio wants to mix recognizable faces with characters who have never been playable in a fighter before.
The 4v4 format
Unlike the 3v3 format of older Marvel versus games, Fighting Souls uses a four-character team structure. Players start matches with a single fighter and an assist character. They gradually unlock the full four-person lineup by fulfilling mid-match conditions like damage accumulation and wall breaks.
The game made its public debut at EVO 2025 and recently went through a closed beta testing phase. That beta introduced the X-Mansion and Savage Land stages. It gave players a chance to test the netcode before the final release. Arc System Works built the game on Unreal Engine 5, which explains the high fidelity of the character models during cinematic super moves.
The game includes an automatic team name generator that shouts out specific Marvel lore references depending on who you pick. It is a neat touch for people who spend hours agonizing over their character select screen. Voice actors Josh Keaton and Scott Porter are reprising their roles as Spider-Man and Star-Lord. They are joined by Dalia Rooni as Ms. Marvel and Risa Mei as Peni Parker.
Editions and extras
Sony and Arc System Works also detailed the purchase options over on the official PlayStation site. Buying early gets you lobby pets like Howard the Duck and Cosmo the Spacedog. The pre-order bonus also includes cosmetic lobby equipment like a Cosmic Surfboard and an Infinity Gauntlet.
The Ultimate Edition includes a Year One Pass with four additional post-launch characters and a stage. It also bundles five alternate costumes. These include Spider-Man's Advanced Suit 2.0 from the Insomniac games, a punk rock outfit for Storm, and a Supreme Ruler outfit for Doctor Doom.
The fighting game community has been waiting for a proper Marvel tag fighter since 2017. If Arc System Works can nail the chaotic energy of a four-character assist system without making the screen completely unreadable, they might actually pull it off. We will find out when the game drops this summer.
