Mago is getting a massive 'Hyperdelicious' console upgrade

Peruvian indie studio Dream Potion Games is bringing its 2022 PC platformer Mago to consoles this winter. The newly announced Mago: Hyperdelicious Edition launches in Q4 2026 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

The original game is a 2D platformer about a wizard trying to rescue his girlfriend from an evil overlord named Gourmet. It has the vibrant pixel art and colorful boss fights you expect from a 16-bit throwback. You run, jump, and use a magic wand to explore eight interconnected worlds. It is a straightforward premise with tight controls.

The core gameplay revolves around a "Purification" wand mechanic. You do not just hit enemies until they fall over. Using the wand on purple-colored objects or enemies purifies them. This triggers different effects depending on the target. Sometimes it opens a new path. Sometimes it changes how an enemy behaves. It adds a layer of puzzle-solving to the standard jumping and dodging.

The game also breaks up the action with unexpected mini-games. You might be running through a standard level one minute and riding a bird or playing a completely different genre the next. The eight worlds are tied together by a large map that hides its own secrets and collectibles.

The new dream world

The Hyperdelicious Edition is not a simple console port. Dream Potion Games built a massive post-game area called the Dream World. This new map has four extra boss battles, new costumes, and a Zelda-style dungeon that breaks up the standard platforming action.

The Dream World also introduces a real-time mechanic that swaps the level between a dream and a nightmare. This changes the enemies and music on the fly. It forces you to adapt to new hazards without breaking the pace of the level. The original game already had a lot of variety across its campaign, so adding a completely new mechanical layer for the post-game is a smart addition.

Dream Potion Games also added an Easy Mode for players who just want to look at the pixel art without dying repeatedly. Activating it doubles your health and removes instant-death pits. Falling down a hole just sends you back to the last ledge instead of ending your run.

Physical editions and platforms

The game is coming to every modern platform, despite the PlayStation-branded trailer above. Selecta Play is handling the physical releases. They are putting out boxed copies for both PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. You can pick up a standard copy for $39.99, or you can spend $69.99 on the "Gourmet Box" collector's edition.

The Gourmet Box includes the game, a set of illustrated postcards, a 66-page manual, and a physical character diorama. The diorama comes in a large collector's box with custom artwork. You do not see many indie platformers get physical releases with actual manuals and dioramas anymore. It is a nice bonus for anyone who missed the original Steam release four years ago.

The original PC version flew under the radar for a lot of people back in 2022. It has a "Very Positive" rating on Steam, but the retro platformer market is incredibly crowded. A multiplatform console release with new mechanics and a fancy physical edition is exactly the kind of push a game like this needs to find a wider audience.
