War in the North Legacy Edition is getting a physical release
Limited Run Games is bringing the remastered 2011 action RPG to physical media for PlayStation 5, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch 2.
Limited Run Games is releasing physical editions of The Lord of the Rings: War in the North - Legacy Edition for the PlayStation 5, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch 2. The open pre-order window begins on October 2 and closes on December 13, 2026.
This physical release follows Aspyr Media's digital remaster from August 2026. The game had been completely unavailable on digital storefronts since late 2019. Now, buyers have a way to put the game back on a shelf.
The Snowblind legacy
Snowblind Studios originally developed War in the North in 2011. The studio built its reputation on top-down action RPGs, specifically Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance and Champions of Norrath. This game took that same loot-heavy, co-op focused formula and moved it to a third-person perspective in Middle-earth.
When the game originally released, reviews were decidedly mixed. Critics pointed out technical bugs, repetitive combat encounters, and a story that felt disconnected from the main movie plots. Despite the middling review scores, the game carved out a dedicated cult following. The appeal was simple: it offered a violent, M-rated hack-and-slash experience with dedicated three-player co-op. You could sit on a couch with two friends and carve through legions of orcs.
What is in the box

Limited Run is offering two different versions of the physical release.
The Standard Edition of War in the North costs $49.99. It includes the game on a disc or cartridge, a protective slipcover, and a Wayfinder's Ledger booklet.
The Deluxe Edition bumps the price to $79.99. Along with the base game and slipcase, it adds a Steelcase, a cloth map of the northern regions, and a weathered lore letter. That letter includes a foreword written by actor Jed Brophy, who played various orcs in the Peter Jackson films.
Modern updates for an older fellowship

The Legacy Edition brings a few specific new features and upgrades to the 2011 code. Aspyr applied visual enhancements to the textures and lighting, while also fixing many of the progression bugs that plagued the original release.
The core gameplay remains exactly as it was. Players control a secondary fellowship fighting Sauron's forces in the northern reaches of Middle-earth. The story focuses on Agandaûr, a Black Númenórean who has rallied an immense army in the ruins of Fornost. While Frodo and Sam head toward Mount Doom, this new group handles the northern front.
The roster includes Eradan (a Dúnedain Ranger focused on stealth and bows), Andriel (an Elven Loremaster with healing and area-of-effect spells), and Farin (a Dwarven Champion built for melee durability). The campaign takes players through familiar lore-rich locations, including the Elven sanctuaries of Rivendell and Lórien, the daunting heights of The Lonely Mountain, and the fog-laden paths of Mirkwood.
The game allows you to seamlessly hot-swap between these three characters when playing solo. However, the design heavily favors multiplayer. As the official description notes, "The survival of your Fellowship and all of Middle-earth depends upon your uniquely skilled heroes working together." Players face off against ruthless Orcs, monstrous Trolls, deadly Wargs, and spectral Barrow-wights. During combat, you can call upon Beleram, a Great Eagle, to attack enemies from the sky, and customize your heroes with unique skills and looted gear.
