Lethal Wedding brings mother-in-law co-op to Genesis and Steam

Mega Cat Studios has launched a Kickstarter campaign for Lethal Wedding, a new top-down co-op shooter coming to the Sega Genesis, Mega Drive, and PC via Steam. The premise skips the usual tropes to give us something much weirder. A cartel of criminal clowns has kidnapped the groom the day before his wedding. You play as the bride, Joanna, and her future mother-in-law, Shelly, as they shoot their way through the circus mafia to get him back.

This ridiculous setup perfectly matches the 16-bit era it targets. The development team clearly drew heavy inspiration from classic run-and-gun titles like Zombies Ate My Neighbors. The Kickstarter campaign is live now and offers physical cartridges for original Sega hardware alongside digital Steam copies. Mega Cat Studios is no stranger to the retro aftermarket. They have published several new games for classic consoles over the past few years. Lethal Wedding has actually been in the works for a while. Early demo builds were circulating at conventions as far back as 2022. The team partnered with publisher 8-Bit Legit to handle this release. The recent addition of a Steam port ensures the game is accessible even if you do not own a dusty Sega Genesis.

Couch co-op and weaponized rabbits

The game spans over 30 levels of top-down shooting action. You can play solo or grab a friend for two-player couch co-op. Joanna and Shelly do not just rely on standard firearms. The arsenal includes a banana submachine gun, a "Gun of Roses" that fires explosive bouquets, and the "Hare Trigger" (a magician's hat that shoots bouncing rabbits).

Players can dodge enemy fire with a dedicated roll mechanic. The action is fast and messy. It leans heavily into B-movie tropes and campy humor. The animated cutscenes explore the natural friction between a bride and her mother-in-law as they try to plan a wedding and murder bazooka-toting bearded ladies at the same time.

Risk and reward

Beyond the basic shooting, Mega Cat Studios added a progression layer called the Vow System. Before entering a stage, you can choose to accept optional gameplay modifiers. You might agree to give enemies extra health or increased movement speed. If you survive the level with those handicaps active, you unlock permanent upgrades.

These rewards include faster reload speeds and defensive items like a bulletproof dress or a combat veil. There are more than 20 randomized enhancements to find. The Vow System adds modern roguelite elements to a very traditional genre. Classic 16-bit shooters usually rely on static difficulty curves. By letting players opt into harder challenges, the game accommodates both casual players who just want to see the end credits and hardcore fans looking to optimize their loadouts.

The Kickstarter campaign offers a few different ways to get the game. Purists can grab a physical Genesis or Mega Drive cartridge complete with a plastic clamshell case and a full-color instruction manual. The developers are also offering collectible rewards like vinyl soundtracks and posters.

The Genesis homebrew scene has been churning out a lot of platformers and role-playing games lately. A chaotic, clown-murdering co-op shooter is a nice change of pace. I am curious to see how the Vow System holds up over a full 30-level campaign, but the core shooting already looks like a great excuse to dust off a second Genesis controller.
