Legacy of Kain's 2003 finale just got a remaster

Crystal Dynamics has brought the 2003 conclusion of the Soul Reaver saga to modern platforms, complete with a playable demo of a canceled sequel.

Legacy of Kain's 2003 finale just got a remaster

Crystal Dynamics and PlayEveryWare have released Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC. The updated 2003 action-adventure game is available today. Nintendo Switch versions are planned for a later date.

Originally released for the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and Windows, Defiance was the fifth and final chronological entry in the dark fantasy series. It concluded a convoluted narrative arc that began in 1996 with Blood Omen. The game forces players to alternate between the vampire lord Kain and his wraith lieutenant Raziel to untangle a time-traveling plot involving the Elder God.

Defiance shifted the series closer to pure character action games. Kain wields the physical Soul Reaver sword and uses telekinetic abilities to throw enemies into environmental hazards. Raziel exists primarily in the spectral realm and uses a magical version of the blade. The dual-protagonist structure gives them distinct combat styles and puzzle mechanics.

The camera might actually cooperate

The 2003 release relied entirely on fixed camera angles. This design choice often made combat frustrating and platforming unnecessarily difficult. Crystal Dynamics added a new third-person free camera for this remaster. Players can now rotate their view using the right stick to get a better read on enemy positions and vertical environments. Players who prefer the original cinematic presentation can still use the fixed perspectives.

Like the recent Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered collection, this release lets players toggle between modern HD graphics and the original PS2-era visuals at any time. This toggle works during gameplay and inside the new photo mode. The developers also patched up environmental geometry to fix seams and stretched textures that were visible in the original release.

The $25 base game includes a few extras beyond the visual upgrades. The menus now house a lore encyclopedia to help track the dense story. Players can also unlock alternate character skins and access several "lost levels." These are areas that Crystal Dynamics built for the 2003 release but cut before launch due to time constraints.

Playing a canceled sequel

The $30 Deluxe Edition includes a playable demo of The Dark Prophecy. This was intended to be the sixth game in the franchise before its cancellation. Crystal Dynamics describes this demo as a historical artifact rather than a finished product. It presents early gameplay ideas and environment designs exactly as they were left over two decades ago. The Deluxe Edition also bundles a digital comic reader with three tie-in comics.

The PC version is available across Steam, the Epic Games Store, and GOG. The console versions are digital-only for now. Crystal Dynamics has stated they are looking into physical releases for the future.

This launch is part of a larger push for the franchise. The publisher is selling a $45 bundle that pairs Defiance Remastered with a pre-order for Legacy of Kain: Ascendance. That upcoming 2D action-platformer is scheduled to launch on March 31. Until then, the remaster provides a way to revisit the series' original conclusion without digging a CRT out of the closet.
