KyTyPS5 emulator boots Demon's Souls Remake to character creation

The open-source PS5 emulator can now render 3D graphics in the 2020 launch title, though it currently runs at a crawling one frame per second.

The open-source PlayStation 5 emulator KyTyPS5 can now boot the Demon's Souls Remake past its initial splash screens and into the character creation menu. The software is successfully rendering 3D in-game graphics, pushing past the menu barriers that previously stopped it.

According to footage shared by DSOGaming, the performance is currently hovering around one to two frames per second. The test footage was captured on high-end PC hardware utilizing AMD Ryzen 9 processors alongside RTX 4080 and 5090 graphics cards. It's nowhere near playable, but getting the engine to render at all is a major technical step for the project.

Translating the architecture

Emulating Sony's ninth-generation console on a PC requires translating instructions from a custom AMD Zen 2 processor and an RDNA 2 graphics architecture. The hardware also relies on a highly customized NVMe SSD setup designed to stream assets directly into memory faster than standard PC architectures traditionally handle. The primary hurdles for emulator developers involve reverse-engineering the operating system's kernel modules and building an accurate shader translation pipeline.

Developer InoriRus originally started the KyTy project in 2022 as a combined PS4 and PS5 emulator for Windows and Linux. It eventually evolved into KyTyPS5, a dedicated open-source effort targeting commercial PlayStation 5 software. The emulator has seen rapid progress through mid-2026. Earlier builds in July were limited to displaying startup screens, but recent updates have allowed the software to move from simple 2D homebrew into booting retail 3D games.

The Bluepoint benchmark

Demon's Souls has served as a primary target for the emulation community because it remains locked to the console hardware. Bluepoint Games rebuilt the 2009 FromSoftware action RPG from the ground up, releasing it as a $69.99 launch title for the PS5 in November 2020. The studio had previously built a reputation for technically pristine updates, including the 2018 Shadow of the Colossus remake and the Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection.

Sony acquired Bluepoint in September 2021 following the success of the Demon's Souls release. The publisher has ported several of its major first-party games to PC over the last few years, including Returnal and Marvel's Spider-Man 2, but Demon's Souls still hasn't made that roster. Without an official port, emulation remains the only path to running the game on computer hardware.

I'm curious how long it will take the developers to get the framerate into double digits. Running at two frames per second on a machine equipped with a top-tier GPU shows exactly how much overhead the translation layer currently demands. The brute force required to emulate modern console architecture is massive.

This update arrives alongside other recent breakthroughs for the software. Earlier in September, KyTyPS5 managed to boot the console version of Grand Theft Auto V, reaching up to 60 FPS during the game's prologue sequences. Fully playable 3D exclusives are still years away, but the emulator is steadily clearing the initial boot barriers.
