James Lambert has released version 3.0 of Junkrunner 64, bringing higher framerates and visual upgrades to his open-world Nintendo 64 homebrew project. The update targets both the technical performance of the outdoor environments and the aesthetic details of the indoor areas.

Junkrunner 64 originally debuted as an entry for the N64brew Game Jam 2025. That competition wrapped up on February 1, 2026, with developers challenged to build a game around the theme of "Repair." Lambert's entry took that prompt literally. The game drops players into a sprawling environment where they must collect scattered junk to fix broken machines.

Better framerates in the overworld

The primary focus of the v3.0 release is optimization. Players can expect much smoother framerates when exploring the main overworld. The Nintendo 64 is notorious for chugging when rendering large 3D environments, so squeezing extra performance out of the 1996 hardware is a major technical achievement.

Indoor locations also received a pass. The update adds new visual improvements to these enclosed spaces, alongside additional music tracks. A few of the repair minigames have been visually tweaked as well.

Beyond the core repair loop, the game has a racing component. Version 3.0 adds a next checkpoint arrow indicator to these races. The new arrow should make navigating the open world at high speeds much less frustrating.

Pushing the bare metal

Lambert is a familiar name in the Nintendo 64 homebrew scene. He previously developed Portal 64, a highly impressive demake of the Valve puzzle game running on actual N64 hardware.

Some previous coverage claims Lambert built his own custom scripting language to make Portal 64 work. That is simply not true. He relies on standard C and assembly programming. He pushes the bare metal of the console using established tools rather than inventing a proprietary language from scratch.

Developing an open-world game for the Nintendo 64 is a massive hurdle regardless of the tools used. The system has a tiny 4-kilobyte texture cache and very limited RAM. Modern developers have to use incredibly clever memory management to stream an open world without crashing the system.

Playing it on real hardware

The homebrew scene for the Nintendo 64 has exploded in recent years. The console was long considered too difficult to develop for without official development kits. Now, open-source toolchains allow creators to bypass the original microcode limitations that Nintendo enforced in the 1990s.

Junkrunner 64 is completely free to download. You can run the ROM file through modern emulators on a PC, but it is built to run on original hardware. Players with a flash cartridge like an EverDrive 64 can load it up and play it on a real CRT television with an original controller.

The v3.0 update makes an already ambitious game jam project feel much closer to a finished retail release.
