Focus Entertainment and Saber Interactive have released a fully animated trailer for John Carpenter's Toxic Commando. The video includes an original track by synthwave band Gunship and voice acting from the horror director himself. The game is currently scheduled to launch next month.

The promotional short, produced by Gizmo Animation, trades the game's 3D graphics for a vibrant, neon-drenched cartoon style straight out of a 1980s Saturday morning broadcast. Gunship, a British synthwave trio known for their retro-futuristic soundscapes, provided a custom track for the video titled "Tell Me When the World Stops Ending". The band has built a massive following by blending 1980s pop culture references with modern electronic production, making them a highly logical choice for a game steeped in VHS-era nostalgia.

The horror director logs on

John Carpenter's involvement goes beyond simply slapping his name on the box art. The director behind The Thing, Halloween, and Escape from New York helped write the game's story and co-composed the soundtrack. In this new trailer, he also provides the voice for the game's primary antagonist, an entity known as the Sludge God.

The 80s nostalgia market is incredibly crowded right now. Getting the actual guy who defined the era's horror cinema to voice a giant undead party-god is certainly one way to stand out. Carpenter is famously an avid video game player who frequently posts about his time in Destiny 2 and Fallout. His pivot into game development feels like a natural progression.

The game's premise is appropriately B-movie material. A scientific experiment to harness the Earth's core goes catastrophically wrong. The disaster releases the Sludge God and turns the surrounding landscape into toxic scum. The scientist responsible decides to fix his mistake by hiring a team of elite mercenaries. When he realizes he cannot afford them, he settles for the budget option: the Toxic Commandos.

Hundreds of enemies on screen

Beneath the grindhouse aesthetic, Toxic Commando is a four-player cooperative first-person shooter. It runs on Saber Interactive's proprietary Swarm Engine, which is specifically designed to handle massive crowds of AI enemies. This is the same underlying technology that powered the literal mountains of zombies in World War Z: Aftermath and the Tyranid swarms in last year's Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2.

The Swarm Engine does not just spawn individual enemies. It treats the horde as a single fluid entity that can climb over itself to reach players on higher ground. If the developers apply that same logic to the Sludge God's minions, players will need to rely heavily on those off-road vehicles to avoid getting swamped.

Players choose from different classes, upgrade their abilities, and drive off-road vehicles across the corrupted terrain. The gameplay loop heavily emphasizes vehicular combat alongside traditional first-person shooting. Squads have to manage their rides while fending off hordes of mutants.

The co-op shooter genre has seen a resurgence recently, but many titles struggle to maintain stable frame rates when the screen fills with enemies. Saber's track record with the Swarm Engine suggests the technical foundation here should be solid, even when the particle effects and zombie counts spike.

Try it before March

John Carpenter's Toxic Commando launches on March 12, 2026. While the original announcement trailer debuted on the Xbox channel, the game is a multiplatform release coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via both Steam and the Epic Games Store.
