Sonic the Hedgehog just got a massive physical pinball table

Jersey Jack Pinball has announced a physical Sonic the Hedgehog pinball machine to coincide with the franchise's 35th anniversary. The table is designed by veteran creator Steve Ritchie and comes in three different tiers: Collector's Edition, Special Edition, and Arcade Edition.

Sonic turns 35 today, June 23, 2026. Sega has spent the last few decades putting the blue blur into every conceivable genre, but a proper, full-scale mechanical pinball machine has been a long time coming. The franchise has always shared DNA with pinball, dating back to the Spring Yard Zone in the original game and the Casino Night Zone in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Jersey Jack is known for integrating heavy technology into its cabinets, and this release leans hard into the modern pinball trend of combining physical targets with digital progression systems.

I hope there's a Sonic Spinball mini game in it

When I first saw the announcement, my immediate thought was that I hope there's a Sonic Spinball mini game in it. The 1993 Sega Genesis classic is the benchmark for Sonic pinball, and nodding to the Toxic Caves would be a perfect easter egg. Even without a direct homage, the layout here looks built for speed.

Players work through a seven-zone adventure system that culminates in boss battles. The progression involves collecting Chaos Emeralds, chasing rings, and fighting an animatronic Dr. Eggman bash toy. Eggman sits at the center of a "Superconducting Battle Zone" magnet that grabs the ball and disrupts shots during boss encounters.

An animatronic Eggman and magnetic loops

The playfield includes a magnetic accelerator loop, a polycarbonate upper playfield, and custom RGB inserts for the Chaos Emeralds. Jersey Jack is also using its proprietary Hotrails lighting system alongside gold micro-LED rings scattered across the board. There are spring targets, inline drop targets, and a captive ball lock designed for bash-dash attacks.

The physical cabinet varies depending on the tier. The Collector's Edition adds red metallic laser-cut armor based on Knuckles, a gold ring shooter knob, and a spin-dash action button on the lockdown bar. It also includes blue flippers and a gold foil apron decal.

The king of flow

The most interesting part of this release is the designer. Steve Ritchie is widely known in the pinball community as the "king of flow." His tables are famous for fast, continuous loop shots that keep the ball moving at high velocities. If you are going to hire someone to design a Sonic the Hedgehog table, Ritchie is the exact right person for the job.

Ritchie says the goal was to keep players locked into pure flow from the first launch to the final ball. The layout reflects that philosophy. Gold wireform ramps and sweeping outer loops encourage continuous combo shots rather than stop-and-go target practice. The upper playfield uses a spring kickback mechanism to maintain momentum.

The pinball market has seen a steady resurgence over the last decade, with companies pulling in major gaming licenses. A Sonic table designed around kinetic energy fits perfectly into that landscape.
