Mega Man 11 line of magnetic Kotobukiya figures pre-sale

Japanese figure manufacturer Kotobukiya has opened pre-orders for a new line of Mega Man 11 figures under its OSHI WORKS label. The initial wave includes Mega Man, Roll, and a combined set of series rivals Dr. Wily and Dr. Light.

Kotobukiya is typically known for its premium ARTFX statues and intricate plastic model kits. The company has a long history with the Mega Man franchise. They previously released highly detailed, poseable model kits for characters from the Mega Man X and Mega Man Battle Network series. Those kits require plastic nippers and assembly time. The OSHI WORKS line is a different approach. These are pre-painted PVC statues aimed at a more casual collector market. According to Kotobukiya, the series is "all about bringing your beloved characters to life at affordable prices." The name comes from the Japanese term "oshi," which translates roughly to a fan's favorite character.

I think these look great. The paintwork uses a pearlescent metallic sheen on Mega Man's armor, and the sculpts capture the slightly softer 3D art style that Capcom introduced with Mega Man 11 in 2018. It is nice to see the eleventh game getting specific merchandise. Most Mega Man collectibles default to the classic 8-bit era designs or the edgy 90s aesthetic of Mega Man X. Mega Man 11 successfully revived the classic franchise after a long hiatus, and the character designs by Yuji Ishihara deserve this kind of physical representation.

Magnets instead of pegs

The most interesting technical detail here is the display system. Traditional figures usually rely on plastic pegs that force the character into a single fixed position on a base. The OSHI WORKS figures use magnets built into the soles of their feet instead.

Each figure comes with a standardized square base that contains a printed iron plate. This allows collectors to place the characters anywhere on the stand and adjust their angles. You can also group multiple characters onto a single base to create custom dioramas. It is a smart solution for crowded display shelves. We have all dealt with figures that refuse to stay upright because a plastic peg snapped off inside a foot. Fixing that problem with magnets is the kind of practical engineering I can appreciate.

The figures themselves are non-scale but stand roughly 18 centimeters (about 7 inches) tall. Mega Man is posed with his Mega Buster raised. Roll is depicted in her updated Mega Man 11 outfit with the red winter jacket. The Dr. Wily and Dr. Light set is particularly notable, as the human scientists rarely get dedicated figures compared to the robot masters.

The figures are being sold individually, with the exception of the two doctors. Mega Man and Roll cost around $58 each. The Dr. Wily and Dr. Light two-pack costs slightly more and acts as a centerpiece for the collection.
