Hyperkin's ModRetro N64 controller just hit Amazon for pre-order
The Captain+ Premium Controller has a Hall effect stick and a dual-layer PCB, and you can pre-order all four colors now.
Hyperkin has opened pre-orders for the Hyperkin x ModRetro Captain+ Premium Controller. The new gamepad targets original Nintendo 64 hardware and the upcoming ModRetro M64 console. According to Hyperkin's announcement, the controller is built for purists who want the classic N64 feel without the classic N64 hardware failures.
No more plastic dust
Anyone who played Mario Party in the late nineties knows exactly what happens to an original N64 analog stick. The plastic components grind against the internal bowl during heavy use. This creates a fine white powder inside the housing and eventually leaves the stick completely limp. The Captain+ solves this fundamental design flaw by using a Hall effect stick. Hall effect sensors use magnets to track movement instead of physical potentiometers. Because the components do not physically rub against each other to register inputs, they do not develop stick drift or mechanical grinding over time.
Hyperkin also promises precise circularity to match the original controller's input range. This is a massive deal for Nintendo 64 emulation and hardware replacement. The original N64 stick had an unusual octagonal gate and a very specific sensitivity curve. Most modern replacement sticks use standard circular gates. That mismatch makes games like Super Mario 64 feel overly twitchy and makes precise aiming in GoldenEye 007 nearly impossible. Getting the circularity right is the single most important factor in a replacement N64 controller. The company also included a dual-layer PCB to improve long-term reliability.
Four colorways on Amazon
The controller comes in four different colors. The options include a standard gray model, a translucent blue version, a translucent green variant, and a solid black edition. Hyperkin shared the links across its social channels, including a brief post on Instagram.
The three-prong survivor
The third-party N64 controller market usually tries to fix Nintendo's original design. Products like the Retro Fighters Brawler64 and the Retro-Bit Tribute64 abandon the infamous three-pronged shape entirely. They opt for a modern, two-handled layout that feels more like a Switch Pro controller. The Captain+ takes the opposite approach. It keeps the original trident shape intact. This caters to players who want the authentic 1996 ergonomic experience.
The branding here ties directly into ModRetro. That is the hardware company founded by Oculus creator Palmer Luckey. ModRetro recently made waves with the Chromatic, a premium FPGA-based Game Boy. They are following it up with the M64, an FPGA recreation of the Nintendo 64 designed to play original cartridges with perfect accuracy on modern televisions. The Captain+ is positioned as the companion controller for that upcoming system, though it uses the original N64 plug and works on unmodified vintage consoles.
Replacing the internal gears works for a few months, but they always fail again. The N64 controller's three-pronged design is still incredibly weird, but at least the internal hardware is finally catching up to modern standards.
