Publisher eastasiasoft is bringing the vertical shoot 'em up BIRDCAGE to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S on September 23. The digital release covers almost every modern platform, including Xbox on PC, and arrives alongside a new gameplay trailer.

Bullets and blades

BIRDCAGE originally launched on Steam and GOG in November 2025. It is a six-stage vertical shooter that mixes traditional bullet hell dodging with close-quarters melee combat. You pilot an experimental gunship called the HALCYON against the forces of the RADON Daughters. The core loop involves swapping between spread shots and focused beams to clear out enemy swarms.

Shoot 'em ups that incorporate melee combat always demand a different kind of spatial awareness. You cannot just sit at the bottom of the screen and hold the fire button. You have to actively push forward into the danger zone to get the most out of the rechargeable Hyperblade, which naturally increases the chances of taking a stray bullet. It adds a layer of risk and reward to the standard dodging mechanics.

The visual style puts gritty 2D pixel art sprites over 2.5D backgrounds, tied together with an anime-inspired cyberpunk narrative told through dialogue cutscenes. The story leans into mature themes, asking whether the pilot can break free of their cage and redeem humanity.

A transcontinental effort

The game comes from POLYGON BIRD, an independent development studio split between creators in Scotland and Greece. They built the mechanics around a high-score chasing system that rewards maintaining attack chains and high kill rates. The soundtrack is handled by composer Barry 'Epoch' Topping, providing a fast-paced backdrop to the arcade action.

Eastasiasoft stepped in to handle the console porting and worldwide publishing duties after the game made the rounds at Tokyo Game Show 2025. It is a natural fit for their catalog. The Hong Kong publisher frequently handles limited physical print runs for niche arcade and shoot 'em up titles, giving smaller developers a path to physical retail.

You will be waiting a bit for the disc

The digital console versions launch at $14.99, complete with a 10 percent launch discount for early buyers. If you want a box on your shelf, the situation is a bit more specific. Physical editions are only being produced for the PlayStation 5. Pre-orders are open right now through the eastasiasoft store and affiliated distribution partners like Playasia, but the actual discs are not expected to ship until March 2027.

Buying physical indie games requires a lot of patience these days. The six-month gap between the digital launch and the physical shipment is standard for these limited print runs. Until those boxes ship next spring, the digital release will have to hold everyone over.
