Hello Kitty Island Adventure is getting its City Town expansion on April 16

Sunblink and Sanrio are launching the "City Town" expansion for Hello Kitty Island Adventure on April 16 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and PC. The downloadable content opens up a new urban metropolis region and introduces the energetic rabbit Usahana as a new companion.

Hello Kitty Island Adventure originally launched as an Apple Arcade exclusive in July 2023 before finally making the jump to Switch and PC in early 2025. Because of that staggered release schedule, Apple Arcade subscribers actually received the City Town content previously as a free update. Now, the expansion is making its way to the console and Steam versions as a paid add-on.

A boat ride through the fog

Accessing the new content requires a bit of legwork in the base game. You need to reach friendship level seven with Badtz-maru, Chococat, Keroppi, Kuromi, and Cinnamoroll. Once you hit that milestone, a new quest called Ship Shape appears on the beach. You have to repair a boat to sail through the fog and reach the new urban island.

The expansion is massive. Sunblink estimates the new region contains over 30 hours of adventure and more than 90 quests. The City Town area itself is a dense urban environment with towering skylines and hidden areas located both above and beneath the city streets.

Players who venture underground will find a sprawling sewer system filled with puzzle rooms. You have to collect City Keys scattered around the map to unlock these subterranean challenges. Completing them rewards you with exclusive furniture and clothing items themed around the new metropolis.

Usahana serves as the primary guide for the new zone. Players can unlock 35 friendship levels with her to earn various rewards. Her friend group comes along too. You can expect to see Pannya-chan, Buppyu-kun, Wanwa-chan, Sora-kun, and Nyako-chan wandering around the new map. You can prepare apartments inside the new Rainbow Tower to convince them to stick around as permanent visitors.

Running the Imagination Cafe

The biggest mechanical addition is the Imagination Cafe. Players get to design and customize their own coffee shop and serve up treats like boba tea, mochi, and dango to the local Sanrio residents. It adds a light management layer to the usual life simulation gameplay loop.

Beyond the cafe, the update adds seven new shops to the city. Existing characters get in on the retail action. You can set up a plushie boutique, an arcade, and blooming orchards with characters like Kuromi, My Sweet Piano, and Tuxedosam.

When Hello Kitty Island Adventure first launched, it drew immediate comparisons to Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The core loop of catching bugs, fishing, and decorating island cabins felt incredibly familiar. However, Sunblink leaned much harder into puzzle-solving and structured questlines. This new DLC seems to double down on that approach with the addition of the sewer puzzle rooms and the cafe management mechanics.

Sunblink has not confirmed the exact price for the City Town expansion on consoles and PC just yet. The game's previous major DLC, Wheatflour Wonderland, launched at $14.99 last year. I suspect we will see a similar price tag when this new metropolis opens its doors next month.
