He-Man's 16-bit arcade brawler is coming this April

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: Dragon Pearl of Destruction is officially launching on April 28, 2026. The retro-styled arcade brawler is coming to PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam.

Bitmap Bureau and Limited Run Games first showed off the project at Gamescom in August 2025. The core pitch is incredibly straightforward. The development team wanted to create the exact coin-op arcade game that kids in the 1980s always wanted but never actually got. Mattel handed over the keys to the franchise, and the result is a massive 16-bit beat 'em up that looks like it was ripped straight out of a Neo Geo or Konami cabinet.

The latest release date trailer gives us our best look yet at the combat mechanics. The video confirms the playable roster includes He-Man, She-Ra, Teela, and Man-At-Arms. Every hero has their own specific playstyle. He-Man uses raw strength and heavy sword strikes, while Teela relies on agile staff combat to keep enemies at a distance.

You also get access to screen-clearing magical abilities. The trailer shows She-Ra dropping a massive area-of-effect attack on a group of Skeletor's minions. Players can even mount Battle Cat during certain segments to tear through enemy ranks with tooth and claw. The whole thing operates on a two-player local co-op system, which is exactly how a game like this should be played.

A studio that knows brawlers

Bitmap Bureau is the right choice for a project like this. The UK-based studio previously developed Final Vendetta and Xeno Crisis. They understand how to make retro combat mechanics feel modern without losing that classic arcade friction. They built this new He-Man game with massive pixel art sprites that look incredibly sharp in motion.

The plot is standard Saturday morning cartoon fare. Skeletor and Evil-Lyn steal the titular Dragon Pearl and drain the Sorceress's power. It is up to you to punch your way through 12 different stages to stop them.

The trailer reveals a detailed overworld map of Eternia. The campaign will take players through familiar locations like the Royal Palace, the Vine Jungle, and the dark corridors of Snake Mountain. You can expect to fight plenty of Hover Bots along the way.

Physical editions are coming

Because Limited Run Games is handling the publishing duties, physical copies are absolutely part of the plan. The company built its entire business model on physical media. They have not announced the specific pre-order window for the physical boxes yet. However, they typically open those sales right around the digital launch date.

If you want a physical cartridge for your Switch or a disc for your PlayStation, you will need to watch the official Limited Run Games store page. They usually offer standard editions alongside massive collector's boxes filled with extra merchandise. Given the merchandising history of Masters of the Universe, a giant collector's edition seems like a guarantee.

I am usually skeptical of licensed nostalgia trips. Too many of them rely entirely on brand recognition and forget to include a fun game underneath. Lol just kidding. I'm a sucker for them. Bitmap Bureau has a solid track record with the beat 'em up genre. If the combat feels half as good as the pixel art animation looks, this could be fantastic.
