Gust is putting the entire Blue Reflection series into one collection this July

Koei Tecmo and Gust have locked in a July 30 release date for Blue Reflection Quartet, a digital collection that bundles all four entries in their magical girl RPG series. The package is coming to PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, the upcoming Switch 2, and PC via Steam.

The franchise started in 2017 with the original Blue Reflection, a game that split its time between high school relationship building and turn-based monster fighting in an alternate dimension. It was the final entry in Gust's "Beautiful Girls Festival" project, an initiative designed to focus entirely on the interactions and personal growth of its female cast. Since then, the property has expanded into a direct sequel, an anime series, and a mobile game. Quartet puts all of them in one place.

More than just ports

This is not a standard bundle of existing console games. The collection includes the 2017 original and the 2021 sequel Second Light, but the other two halves of the package are entirely new console experiences.

The original game received a few modern updates. Gust added high-resolution textures, an autosave function, and increased movement speed to make exploring the school a bit less tedious. The updated version of Second Light now includes eight additional characters pulled from the anime and mobile game as playable party members.

The anime adaptation, Blue Reflection Ray, aired 24 episodes in 2021. Gust has turned that story into a condensed 3D game. You explore the collective unconscious world known as the Common playing as Hiori and Ruka. The studio also added new short stories, plus a prologue and epilogue to connect the anime's plot to the rest of the timeline.

Rescuing a dead gacha game

Blue Reflection Sun was a mobile and PC gacha game that launched in early 2023 and shut down in May 2024. Instead of letting it disappear into the void of dead live-service games, the developer rebuilt Sun as an offline console game. They completely removed the mobile mechanics and replaced them with the battle system from Second Light. They also added 24 brand-new character events to flesh out the cast.

Extreme school makeovers

These games lean heavily into school customization and downtime. You can drastically change the campus environment, like turning the swimming pool into a giant outdoor bath decorated with flags and rubber ducks. The relationship-building segments are a break from the combat, where the expanded roster of characters transform into their magical "Reflector" forms to fight monsters.

Combat across the series relies on a turn-based system where managing the timeline is just as important as dealing damage. As characters land attacks, they build up ether to unleash stronger magical abilities or trigger their transformations. The remade version of Sun specifically adopts the faster, more refined combat mechanics originally introduced in Second Light.

To tie the four separate stories together, Gust added a reference database. You can check chronological flowcharts of major events and character relationship charts across the entire series to figure out how everyone knows each other. The developers also included a gallery of artwork by series character designer Mel Kishida.

Digital pre-orders are open now through the official website. Early buyers get a set of four special photo frames, and a "Quartet" photo frame is available as a free limited-time bonus for use in Second Light's photo mode.

If you plan to pick this up on Nintendo hardware, keep in mind that the Switch and Switch 2 versions are sold as separate products. Koei Tecmo noted on the game's site that save data does not transfer between the two consoles, so you will need to decide which platform you want to commit to before starting your playthrough.
