GOG upgrades six Wing Commander games for existing owners

This is an update to a previous story.

Anyone who already owns the classic Wing Commander games or Privateer 2: The Darkening on GOG now has free Anniversary Edition upgrades waiting in their digital library, while Wing Commander: Prophecy joins the GOG Preservation Program alongside the first digital PC release of 1996's Road Rash. These restored editions launched on November 5 during GOG's 18th anniversary showcase as part of a broader push that also saw EA bring 25 classic PC games to Steam and the EA App.

GOG's handling of the rollout stands out for how it treats existing libraries. Each of the six updated Origin Systems space sims comes packaged as a two-in-one bundle containing both the newly restored Anniversary Edition and the original Legacy build. The Legacy versions aren't sold separately anymore, though they remain supported in the GOG Preservation Program so they'll keep running on modern Windows systems. Normally $9.99 each, the seven Anniversary Editions are 50% off at $4.99 until November 19.

The lineups split by age: 1990's Wing Commander and 1991's Wing Commander II: Vengeance of the Kilrathi get 35th Anniversary Editions, while Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger (1994), Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom (1996), Privateer 2: The Darkening (1996), and Wing Commander: Prophecy (1997) receive 30th Anniversary Editions.

According to EA's restoration breakdown by senior producer Jim Vessella, the project started in March 2022 when he found 200 Betacam tapes in his cubicle and was led to a Redwood Shores storage vault holding nearly 20,000 archival media assets. By April 2026, a small team had digitized 6,000 of those VHS, Betacam, and D1 tapes, recovering roughly 2,500 hours of footage. Editors pieced that material back into more than 1,500 live-action full-motion video scenes across the restored titles, giving players the option to watch the raw master captures or an upscaled pass.

Going back to the physical master tapes so Mark Hamill and Clive Owen don't look like they're broadcasting through a waffle iron is a level of archival effort big publishers rarely bother with.

GOG and modders stepped in for Prophecy

EA led the restoration on five of the space sims by working directly with community modders like Lance "AllTinker" Burns to integrate fan patches, fix game-speed bugs on modern CPUs, and add controller support and cloud saves. Wing Commander: Prophecy was a tougher problem. Vessella's team digitized over 140 FMV scenes from D1 and Digital Betacam tapes by the end of 2025, which looked cleaner than the unreleased DVD assets that have circulated among fans for years, but the game lacked a universal community patch to make those higher-resolution videos run smoothly on modern hardware.

That's where GOG's engineers stepped in after meeting with EA at GDC 2026. Collaborating with the modding community to build the Wing Commander Prophecy Enhancement Patch, GOG took over the technical restoration for the 1997 entry (which includes the Secret Ops episodes) and brought the Anniversary Edition into its Preservation Program. It supports Xbox and PlayStation controllers out of the box, though you still have to duck into the pause menu aboard the Midway and manually flip the input setting to joystick. I'm curious how well a DualSense maps to late-90s space dogfighting once things get crowded, considering these games were built around a desk full of flight sticks and keyboard shortcuts.

Road Rash returns with Soundgarden intact

The seventh restoration in the batch isn't a space sim at all. Road Rash: 30th Anniversary Edition is the first digital release of the 1996 Windows 95 port (itself based on the 1994 3DO version of EA's motorcycle combat racer, which also hit PlayStation and Sega Saturn).

Alongside master-tape FMV restorations, 60fps gameplay, windowed mode, and controller support, EA actually relicensed the entire 1990s grunge soundtrack. Vessella noted that the final music license was secured in September 2026 after negotiations with labels and individual band members. Soundgarden, Paw, Hammerbox, Monster Magnet, Swervedriver, and Therapy? are all still here, and the update restores a feature from the Sega CD version that lets those licensed tracks play during the races themselves rather than just sitting in the menus.
