God of War: Sons of Sparta just added a co-op roguelite mode

PlayStation has released a new roguelite challenge mode for God of War: Sons of Sparta. The update is called The Pit of Agonies. It is available now on PlayStation 5 and adds randomized combat trials to the 2D action game.

If you missed the initial release, Sons of Sparta was a surprise announcement during Sony's February 12 State of Play presentation. Developed by Mega Cat Studios in collaboration with Santa Monica Studio, the game dropped the very same day it was revealed. It is a Metroidvania prequel that follows a teenage Kratos and his brother Deimos during their brutal training at the Spartan Agoge. The project trades the series' usual over-the-shoulder 3D cinematic camera for 16-bit pixel art and side-scrolling platforming. It is the first time the franchise has returned to its Greek mythology roots for a full game since 2013. The story completely bypasses the recent Norse saga.

Two Spartans are better than one

The Pit of Agonies is structured as a dedicated endgame challenge. Players face continuous, randomized waves of enemies across different cavern environments. The mode includes solo play alongside a two-player couch co-op option. This means a second player can grab a DualSense controller and jump in locally to help clear the rooms. The base game is strictly a single-player affair. This multiplayer addition is a distinct mechanical shift for the title.

The trailer shows a split-screen view with three different combat scenarios happening at once. It also highlights the cooperative mechanics in action. At one point, Kratos and Deimos perform a synchronized special attack against a massive skeletal boss. The narrator leans heavily into the franchise's dramatic tone, declaring that "young Spartans seek to make themselves men" before the characters casually discuss going back in for another run. The video even includes a clever visual nod to the hardware. A brief clip shows a character pushing a large stone block shaped exactly like a PlayStation controller.

A shift in genre

Sons of Sparta is the first 2D side-scroller in the franchise since the 2007 mobile game God of War: Betrayal. Mega Cat Studios built the game with a heavy focus on exploration and backtracking. The design takes clear inspiration from classic genre staples. The combat adapts the familiar combo system into a strictly two-dimensional plane. Players collect Red Orbs, unlock specific abilities tied to different items, find hidden upgrades, and use defined save points scattered across the map. Kratos wields the Arms of Sparta in this installment. This spear-and-shield combination requires a different approach than his usual chained blades.

Mega Cat Studios CEO James Deighan previously mentioned that a God of War project had been at the top of the studio's wishlist for years. The team pitched the idea of a pixel-art prequel directly to Sony, and the pitch resulted in this unusual collaboration. The developers also integrated modern hardware quirks into the retro aesthetic. The game uses the DualSense controller's haptic feedback to emphasize the weight of the 2D combat. Every spear thrust and shield block translates directly into physical rumble.

You can find more details about the update on the official PlayStation store page. Since the main campaign focuses heavily on narrative and unlocking traversal abilities, a pure combat arena gives the mechanics a place to stretch out. The addition of local multiplayer changes the dynamic of the boss fights entirely. It gives Deimos a chance to be directly controlled by a human rather than just existing as a plot device, and that is a highly practical upgrade.
