Nalua Studio has announced Gley Lancer: Overdrive, a complete reimagining of the 1992 Mega Drive shoot-'em-up built natively for the Neo Geo and modern consoles. The developer revealed the project today with an announcement trailer showing off redrawn pixel art and a new shield mechanic. It launches in 2027.

This isn't a simple ROM hack or a basic port. Nalua Studio is treating the IP as if it were developed concurrently in the 1990s for SNK's arcade hardware. The game will see a physical release on Neo Geo AES and MVS cartridges, alongside digital versions for PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Releasing a Sega Mega Drive classic on SNK's notoriously expensive 24-bit arcade hardware is a fun historical inversion.

The import tax

Playing Advanced Busterhawk Gley Lancer before 2021 required deep pockets. Masaya and NCS Corporation released the original game exclusively for the Sega Mega Drive in Japan in July 1992. It never received a Western localization during its original run. Because of that, original cartridges commanded hundreds of dollars on the secondary market for decades.

The game earned its reputation. It followed a 16-year-old pilot named Lucia Cabrock who steals an experimental starfighter to rescue her kidnapped father. The 16-bit release stood out for its dramatic voice-acted anime cutscenes and a highly customizable Gunner system. Players could lock their satellite weapon pods into different formations, allowing them to shoot backwards or focus fire forward. It remained a collector's holy grail until Ratalaika Games finally released a cheap digital port on modern consoles five years ago.

Built for the arcade

Nalua Studio is rebuilding the entire game from the ground up. The studio, founded in 2023, specializes in developing new commercial releases that run natively on vintage architecture. They previously worked on Vengeance Hunters, and they are applying that same hardware-level focus here. The Neo Geo still has a highly active commercial aftermarket scene, and Nalua is building this specifically for those original 1990 constraints.

Gley Lancer: Overdrive features 11 revamped stages, completely new sprite work, and FM synth audio arrangements. The biggest mechanical change is the titular Overdrive system. It acts as a risk-reward mechanic that converts defensive shields into a massive directional energy burst, which also is a score multiplier. I want to see how that changes the pacing, especially since the original game was already fairly chaotic.

The modern console and PC versions get a few extra features. The Steam store page notes that these digital editions support widescreen presentation, mouse controls, and dedicated Bullet Hell modes. They will also be fully compatible with the Steam Deck.

We won't have to wait long to see how the new mechanics hold up in practice. The game is scheduled to make its public playable debut at Tokyo Game Show 2026. The event runs from September 17 to September 21 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan.

A full release is planned for 2027. Nalua Studio hasn't yet announced pricing for the physical Neo Geo cartridges or the digital console versions. Preorders start after Necro Pop orders have shipped.
