Animation studio Science SARU has released the third promotional video for Ghost in the Shell THE GHOST IN THE SHELL, confirming the television series will begin broadcasting on July 7, 2026.

I have said this many times, but Ghost in the Shell is by far my favorite series. The new footage looks fantastic. I cannot wait for this release.

Going back to 1989

The visual direction is a sharp pivot from recent entries. The new art style leans heavily into a retro-inspired aesthetic that closely mirrors Masamune Shirow's original 1989 manga. The character designs rely on softer lines, vibrant color palettes, and a traditional cel-shaded look. Major Motoko Kusanagi appears much closer to her initial manga incarnation than the cold, tactical operative seen in the Mamoru Oshii films. This is a massive departure from the sterile, fully 3D computer graphics used in the recent SAC_2045 series.

Science SARU is handling the animation production. The studio built its reputation on fluid, highly stylized motion in projects like Devilman Crybaby and Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. Their approach to motion gives the cybernetic combat a very different weight compared to the rigid, hyper-realistic military aesthetic of the Stand Alone Complex era. The animation blends traditional hand-drawn techniques with modern compositing to achieve that late-80s anime texture. The character designs highlight this blend perfectly. Detailed urban environments drenched in neon lighting feel ripped straight from a vintage artbook.

Thirty years of cybernetics

The franchise has a long history of video game adaptations that run parallel to its animation milestones. The 1997 PlayStation game developed by Exact put players inside a Fuchikoma tank for a third-person shooter experience. The mechanics were incredibly ambitious for the era. Players could drive their multi-legged tanks up walls and across ceilings, completely reorienting the camera to navigate complex vertical arenas. It remains one of the most mechanically interesting interpretations of the universe.

Later console generations saw games tied to the Stand Alone Complex timeline, with a third-person shooter on the PlayStation 2 and a first-person shooter on the PlayStation Portable. The most recent major interactive release is the Ghost in the Shell: Tabletop Roleplaying Game, which had a Kickstarter in November 2025 and is scheduled for a retail release in 2026. First Assault Online, a PC shooter released in 2016, attempted to translate Section 9's tactical squad dynamics into a competitive multiplayer format. Players could share cybernetic abilities with nearby teammates through a mechanic called SkillSync. The servers shut down just over a year after launch.

The summer broadcast schedule

The July 7 broadcast date locks the series in for the summer 2026 anime season. Amazon announced on February 12, 2026, that it will exclusively stream the Ghost in the Shell anime remake worldwide (excluding Russia and China), and holds an exclusive early streaming window in Japan. Previous iterations have landed on Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video. Regional licensing details are still pending.

A return to Shirow's original visual tone is a welcome change of pace. We will find out if the narrative matches the strength of the art direction in a few months.
