Garfield's 3D platformer Escape from Monday is out now
Microids has released the launch trailer for Garfield: Escape from Monday, a surreal 3D platformer available today on consoles and PC.
Microids released the launch trailer for Garfield: Escape from Monday today alongside the game's arrival on consoles and PC. Developed by OSome Studio, the 3D platformer traps the orange cat inside a food-induced nightmare after Jon Arbuckle feeds him a spinach lasagna. It's available now for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.
The premise is straightforward. Corny television personality Chef Monday creates a vegetable-filled lasagna, Garfield eats it, and he immediately falls into a coma. The only way to wake up is to navigate a series of dream worlds, beat up hostile vegetables, and eat enough meat-filled lasagna to reset his taste buds. It's a solid excuse to put a cat in a turkey costume and make him fight a giant spectral chef.
Three costumes and a vegetable nightmare
The launch trailer shows off a mix of standard 3D platforming and high-speed rail sections. One sequence has Garfield riding a minecart down a track lined with giant hot dogs, condiments, and pickles. The environments lean heavily into the surreal food theme, splitting the levels into distinct zones like a vegetable nightmare and a barbecue desert.
OSome Studio built the platforming around three costumes that grant unique abilities. The outfit selection screen shows Garfield cycling through cowboy, turkey, and surfing gear. The turkey suit allows for short-distance flight. That doesn't sound like much, but it happens to be the most cardiovascular exercise the cat has seen since 1978. Players have to swap between these abilities to clear gaps and manage the platforming puzzles scattered across the dream worlds.
Gathering food is the primary objective. If you collect enough items during a stage, the game rewards you with three lasagnas at the finish line. Additional lasagnas are hidden in secret areas off the main path. The loop is simple, but the developer included shorter side levels to break up the pacing between the main platforming challenges.
Fighting a giant lasagna
Combat is a core part of the progression. The trailer highlights a major boss fight against a giant, hostile lasagna monster that fires projectile attacks across a flat arena. Another clip shows a massive, spectral Chef Monday towering over the stage, dropping hazards onto the platform while Garfield tries to avoid the blast zones.
OSome Studio is familiar with this scale of licensed platformer. They previously worked on The Smurfs: Mission Vileaf, and they're applying a similar structure here. The controls aren't overly complicated, targeting a family audience while keeping the movement precise enough for the later worlds. Familiar characters like Odie, Arlene, and Pookie also show up throughout the dream worlds to offer support or just stand around looking confused.
Garfield: Escape from Monday is out now. The digital version is up on all major storefronts, and you'll find more details on the publisher's official website. The base game costs $29.99, which seems fair for a six-hour trip through a carbohydrate fever dream.
