GammaOS Nano v1.4.1 adds PS3 XMB theming and better DS controls

Developer TheGammaSqueeze released GammaOS Nano v1.4.1 on August 13, bringing extensive theming options, expanded DraStic emulation controls, and a more reliable Bluetooth stack to several budget retro handhelds. The update builds on the foundation laid by the v1.4 rollout in late July. It adds polish and compatibility fixes based on the August 6 build of LineageOS 21.

The best thing about GammaOS is how it completely transforms cheap hardware. Devices like the Anbernic RG DS or the TrimUI Brick usually ship with bloated, sluggish Android builds that force you to swipe through standard tablet menus just to launch a Game Boy Advance game. GammaOS Nano strips all of that away. It is a lightweight, instant-boot micro-OS that takes direct control of the display panel, power management, and audio subsystems at boot time. It makes a $60 Android slab feel like a dedicated, focused gaming console.

TheGammaSqueeze has been building custom firmwares for a few years, starting with standard GammaOS for devices like the Anbernic RG556. Those earlier builds focused on fixing driver issues, low-latency input, and display scaling problems that manufacturers left behind. GammaOS Nano takes a different approach by attempting to hide the underlying Android 14 architecture entirely.

XMB and DSi themes

The v1.4.1 update introduces switchable interface themes that mimic classic console menus. You can now set the launcher to look like the PlayStation 3 XMB, the Nintendo DSi menu, or a stripped-down Minima layout. The update also adds support for video wallpapers. There is always the danger of spending more time customizing a frontend than actually playing games, and this update provides plenty of new ways to fall into that trap.

Better dual-screen emulation

Dual-screen emulation gets a major boost here. The integrated DraStic-nano runner now includes expanded layout options and better save-state controls. This is useful for the Anbernic RG DS and RG Rotate, where managing two screens on a single display requires constant layout toggling depending on the game. You can quickly swap screens or adjust the aspect ratio without digging through nested emulator menus.

The update also brings a faster network stack, a fuller desktop Android experience for those who need to drop out of the micro-OS, and RetroAchievements support baked directly into the runner. A custom SPL integration even enables dual-boot Linux environments directly from external SD cards.

Getting the update

Right now, the v1.4.1 build archive is available via a password-protected post on the GammaOS Patreon for Insider tier supporters. TheGammaSqueeze typically pushes these builds to the public GitHub repository after an initial testing period.

If you own a TrimUI Brick, MagicX Mini Zero 28, or one of the supported Anbernic devices, the performance gains over stock firmware are well worth the installation process. The stock firmware on these devices is often barely functional out of the box. Replacing it with a clean, optimized operating system is the only way to get the performance you actually paid for.
