GammaOS Next 1.4 brings new kernel fixes to Android retro handhelds
GammaOS Next version 1.4 is out, bringing performance tweaks and broader compatibility to the popular custom Android firmware for retro gaming handhelds.
Community developer TheGammaSqueeze released version 1.4 of GammaOS Next this month. The update brings a fresh round of kernel fixes, emulation launcher performance improvements, and broader device compatibility to the custom Android operating system.
Budget retro handhelds from companies like Anbernic or Retroid usually pair decent hardware with a frustrating software experience. Stock Android on these devices is often bloated with unnecessary background apps and plagued by driver issues. GammaOS replaces that factory software with a clean, debloated build based on LineageOS. It strips out the junk and focuses entirely on gaming performance.
Stripping out the stock Android bloat
The original GammaOS targeted devices running the UNISOC T618 chipset, like the Anbernic RG405M and RG505. The manufacturer firmware on those handhelds had notorious problems. Users dealt with display refresh rate mismatches that caused stuttering in emulators, poor analog stick deadzones, and aggressive thermal throttling. GammaOS fixed those core issues at the system level. GammaOS Next expands that philosophy to support a wider array of chipsets and newer handheld releases.
Freeing up RAM for heavy emulation
When you are trying to emulate the PlayStation 2 or GameCube on a budget mobile chip, every megabyte of RAM matters. Stock Android runs background services that drain the battery and consume memory. By moving to a debloated LineageOS foundation, GammaOS frees up system resources. That overhead reduction is often the difference between a game running at full speed or dropping frames during busy scenes.
Kernel tweaks and launcher speed
The July 2026 release of version 1.4 focuses on iterative polish. The update includes kernel-level adjustments to improve system stability during heavy emulation workloads. It also speeds up navigation within emulation frontends, which cuts down the lag when scrolling through large ROM libraries. Device compatibility has been expanded to cover recent hardware releases. Newer Android handhelds can now ditch their factory software on day one.
I always find it a little absurd that we rely on unpaid community developers to make retail hardware function correctly. The factory OS usually works, which is the nicest thing I can say about it. TheGammaSqueeze essentially finishes the job the hardware manufacturers started, unlocking the actual potential of the internal components.
Installing custom firmware requires following a specific set of flashing instructions, which can be intimidating for people used to turnkey consoles. You have to unlock the bootloader and flash the new image using a PC. The payoff is a device that feels completely different. Anbernic's metal-shell RG405M is a premium piece of hardware that felt cheapened by its factory software. Running GammaOS makes the user experience match the build quality.
