Game Freak reveals Beast of Reincarnation, a new RPG where you wield your dog as a sword
The Pokémon developers are back with a darker action RPG where bonding with your canine companion turns them into a literal weapon.
Game Freak has unveiled the first substantial gameplay footage for Beast of Reincarnation, a new action RPG scheduled for release in Summer 2026 on Xbox Series X|S and PC. During the recent Developer_Direct presentation, director Kota Furushima demonstrated the title's core "one-person, one-dog" combat mechanics and confirmed a Day One launch on Xbox Game Pass.
For a studio that has spent the better part of thirty years defining the monster-catching genre, this project represents a distinct tonal shift. While Game Freak is synonymous with Pokémon, their portfolio actually includes a surprising number of experimental titles like the Game Boy Advance platformer Drill Dozer and the rhythm-solitaire hybrid Pocket Card Jockey. Beast of Reincarnation appears to lean harder into action-heavy territory than their previous non-Pokémon outings, presenting a darker aesthetic and more demanding real-time combat.
A Boy and His Blade (Dog)
The game centers on two protagonists: a human named Emma and a dog named Koo. Furushima explained that while Emma handles physical sword attacks, Koo provides magical support. The combat system relies on a synergy between the two characters. Players control Emma directly while issuing commands to Koo to cast spells or distract enemies. It creates a rhythm where the player must manage both positioning and their companion's cooldowns simultaneously.
The most visually distinct feature shown was the "Awakening" state. When specific conditions are met during battle, Koo transforms into a larger, mystical beast form. Rather than riding the beast into battle, Emma grabs its tail and wields the entire dog as a massive weapon. It is certainly one way to interpret the concept of a "service animal."
According to Furushima, the relationship between the two characters is mechanical as well as narrative. A bonding system tracks interactions between Emma and Koo. The more the player interacts with the dog, the smarter Koo becomes, allowing for more effective autonomous actions during combat. Neglecting the dog presumably results in a less effective partner, which feels like a fair punishment for anyone who refuses to pet the digital dog.
Beyond the Tall Grass
The narrative takes place in a town called Ise-Kaim, a setting that Furushima describes as a place where "memories and the past intersect." The antagonists are "Grims," parasites that infect creatures and turn them into monsters. The visual style uses a "Gamayara" aesthetic, which seems to blend cel-shading with a rougher, sketch-like quality that distinguishes it from the cleaner looks of the studio's mainline Nintendo releases.
This release is significant for Game Freak. The studio was founded in 1989 and spent its early years developing titles like Pulseman for the Sega Genesis and Jerry Boy for the Super Famicom before Pokémon Red and Blue consumed their production pipeline in 1996. While they have released smaller indie-style games through their "Gear Project" initiative, a full-scale action RPG on high-end consoles is a rare deviation from their handheld roots.
Microsoft confirmed the game supports Xbox Play Anywhere, meaning a single digital purchase covers both Xbox and PC versions, with cross-save functionality included. The game will also be playable via Xbox Cloud Gaming at launch.
Beast of Reincarnation is set to launch in Summer 2026.
