Forza Horizon 6 and Subnautica 2 hit Game Pass this month

Microsoft has announced the first wave of Xbox Game Pass additions for May 2026, headlined by day-one releases of Forza Horizon 6 and Subnautica 2.

The lineup includes a mix of massive first-party titles and highly anticipated indie sequels. All three highlighted games are hitting the service on their release days. They will be playable across Xbox Series X/S consoles and PC, with cloud streaming available for Ultimate tier subscribers.

Playground Games returns to the festival

Forza Horizon 6 is the obvious anchor here. Playground Games has maintained a tight grip on the open-world arcade racing genre since the first Horizon spin-off launched on the Xbox 360 in 2012. The previous entry took the festival to Mexico back in 2021 and amassed millions of players in its first week.

A new Horizon game usually acts as a technical showcase for Microsoft's current hardware. The series consistently pushes the limits of draw distances and dynamic weather systems using the proprietary ForzaTech engine. The developers say they have spent the last five years overhauling their physics and lighting models. Having it drop on Game Pass day one is standard procedure for Xbox first-party studios, but a flagship release of this size is what justifies the monthly cost for many players.

Co-op survival in the ocean

Unknown Worlds is bringing Subnautica 2 to the service. The original 2018 survival game built a massive audience by combining base building with genuine deep-sea terror. The standalone expansion Below Zero followed in 2021.

The sequel expands the formula by adding official multiplayer support. Players can explore the alien oceans with up to three friends. Survival games thrive on Game Pass because the barrier to entry is zero. You can easily convince a friend to download a multiplayer game they already have access to. Subnautica 2 is launching in early access, which matches how Unknown Worlds developed the first two games alongside community feedback. The game is not an Xbox exclusive and will also be available for purchase on PC storefronts like Steam.

Teenage nostalgia from Annapurna

The third major addition is Mixtape. Beethoven and Dinosaur is the development studio behind this one. They previously created The Artful Escape, a music-focused platformer that also debuted on Game Pass a few years ago.

Mixtape focuses on three friends on their last night of high school. The gameplay is built around a soundtrack of licensed music from bands like Devo, The Smashing Pumpkins, and Iggy Pop. The game frames its narrative through a series of vignettes tied to specific songs. Players skate, party, and avoid the police in a series of stylized memories. The developers are leaning heavily into late 1990s nostalgia. It is the exact type of narrative-heavy indie game that tends to find a strong audience on subscription services.

Microsoft relies on these heavy-hitting months to keep subscribers engaged. Between a flagship racing game, a multiplayer survival sequel, and a curated indie experience, the May lineup covers the major bases.
