Final Fantasy's 40th anniversary exhibition hits Tokyo in 2027
Square Enix is celebrating 40 years of Final Fantasy with a massive exhibition at the Tokyo National Museum starting in January 2027.
Square Enix has announced the Final Fantasy 40th Anniversary Exhibition. The event is officially titled "Endless World of Fantasy." It will run from January 8 to April 4, 2027, at the Tokyo National Museum's Hyokeikan gallery.
The publisher released a commemorative teaser trailer to mark the announcement. The video serves as a chronological montage of the franchise. It starts with the original 1987 Famicom release and runs all the way through Final Fantasy XVI.

According to the official Japanese website, the exhibition will feature video presentations, music, interactive experiences, and exclusive illustrations. An English portal is also live with basic event information.
Four decades of crystals
The franchise has shifted dramatically since its 8-bit origins. The trailer highlights this progression by flashing through key moments from the mainline entries. The series started on Nintendo hardware, defined the original PlayStation era, and now spans modern consoles and PC.

You see the classic cinematic cutscene of Sephiroth engulfed in flames from Final Fantasy VII. A few seconds later, Clive Rosfield channels his own flames in Final Fantasy XVI. The contrast between the pre-rendered 1997 video and modern real-time rendering is sharp. It is wild to see them placed side by side in an official timeline.

The exhibition aims to capture that entire history. Square Enix says the event will include collaborative content alongside the historical retrospectives. The promotional material explicitly welcomes both veteran players and newcomers who have yet to start their journey.
Getting in the door
The venue itself is a major piece of Tokyo's cultural infrastructure. The Hyokeikan is the oldest exhibition building at the Tokyo National Museum. It is a fitting location for a gaming series that has been running for forty years.
If you want to attend, you need to plan ahead. The museum will not sell tickets on-site. Square Enix App advance ticket presales open today, September 10. General ticket sales begin on September 24.
The exhibition will also refresh its lineup halfway through the run. Square Enix plans to add new exhibition content starting February 16, 2027. Standard operating hours are 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM, with extended hours until 8:00 PM on Fridays and Saturdays. The venue is generally closed on Mondays.
Sadly, I'm not in Japan. If you are, you should go to this. The sheer volume of art and music generated by this franchise over forty years guarantees they will have plenty of material to fill a museum wing. The rest of us will just have to watch the inevitable walk-through videos on YouTube.
