Acclaimed anime director and designer Mahiro Maeda is joining the upcoming Final Fantasy XIV and Neon Genesis Evangelion crossover project as a special guest artist. Square Enix confirmed the addition in a recent update from Naoki Yoshida, noting that Maeda will contribute designs to the "Ghosts of Desire" raid series.

The Evangelion collaboration was originally announced back in April 2026 during the North American Fan Festival. It serves as the 24-player Alliance Raid content for the upcoming Evercold expansion, targeting level 110 players. Maeda, who directed Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time alongside Hideaki Anno, is stepping in to design concepts for the raid encounters and the gear rewards.

Maeda has a massive portfolio outside of the Rebuild of Evangelion films. He co-founded Studio Gonzo and directed projects like Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo and segments of The Animatrix. His concept art and mechanical designs are highly distinct, often blending organic and synthetic elements. I am curious to see how his visual style translates into the MMO's engine, especially since Final Fantasy XIV gear sets have to map to dozens of different player races and body types.

The addition of Maeda suggests Square Enix is leaning heavily into the visual identity of the films. When Yoko Taro brought Nier: Automata to the game, the resulting gothic android outfits fundamentally changed the aesthetic of player hubs for years. An Evangelion crossover will likely have a similar impact, potentially flooding the game with plugsuits or NERV-inspired tactical gear.

Following Yoko Taro and Yasumi Matsuno

Final Fantasy XIV has a long track record of handing its 24-player raids over to high-profile guest developers. These Alliance Raids are large-scale, casual-friendly encounters that drop unique gear sets and usually span three separate patches.

During the Stormblood expansion, Yasumi Matsuno wrote the Return to Ivalice series, pulling heavily from Final Fantasy Tactics. Shadowbringers brought in Yoko Taro for the YoRHa: Dark Apocalypse crossover. Bringing in a heavy hitter from Studio Khara fits the established pattern for these post-launch patch cycles. Director Naoki Yoshida has been an outspoken fan of mecha anime for years, making an Evangelion crossover a logical next step for the game's collaborative content.

Alliance Raids consist of three parties of eight players working together to clear large boss encounters. They are generally less punishing than the game's Savage-tier content, making them accessible to the broader player base. This means anyone who catches up to the level 110 cap will be able to experience Maeda's boss designs without needing a dedicated hardcore progression group.

$12.99 a month across five platforms

The "Ghosts of Desire" raids will roll out in the patch cycle following the launch of the Evercold expansion. Final Fantasy XIV is currently available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and Mac.

The game still operates on its traditional model, requiring the base game, the latest expansion, and a $12.99 monthly subscription to access current content. Players looking to jump in just for the Evangelion crossover will need to complete the main scenario quests up through Evercold before they can queue into the new raids.
