Fatal Frame II is getting a full remake on Switch 2 and PS5

Koei Tecmo has officially announced Fatal Frame: Crimson Butterfly Remake, a complete reimagining of the 2003 survival horror title, scheduled to launch on March 12, 2026. The game will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and the Nintendo Switch 2.

The announcement confirms the return of what many fans consider the high point of the franchise. Originally released on the PlayStation 2, and later the original Xbox, Fatal Frame II follows twin sisters Mio and Mayu Amakura as they wander into a lost village where the inhabitants are frozen in a perpetual, gruesome festival. It is widely cited as one of the scariest games of the sixth console generation, right alongside Silent Hill 2.

Not the first remake

This isn't the first time Koei Tecmo has revisited the Amakura twins. The game received a significant overhaul in 2012 for the Nintendo Wii under the title Project Zero 2: Wii Edition, or Deep Crimson Butterfly. That version shifted the perspective from fixed camera angles to an over-the-shoulder third-person view and added motion controls.

While the new announcement promises "completely overhauled graphics, sound, game systems, and controls," it appears to retain the third-person perspective established in the Wii version rather than returning to the fixed angles of the PS2 original. However, this 2026 release is a new production, not a remaster of the Wii code.

New camera mechanics

The core gameplay loop remains focused on the Camera Obscura, a weaponized antique camera that exorcises spirits when you take their picture. According to Koei Tecmo, the combat system has been expanded with deeper exploration mechanics. The remake also adds a dedicated "hand-holding" mechanic that allows players to physically guide Mayu through the environment. This is likely a mechanical solution to the original game's escort AI, which occasionally resulted in Mayu wandering off to stare at walls while ghosts attacked you.

The voice cast features Yui Kondo as Mio and Haruka Shiraishi as Mayu. The antagonist, Sae Kurosawa, will be voiced by Ayako Kawasumi.

Pricing and editions

The standard edition will cost 6,380 yen (roughly $42 USD), though international pricing hasn't been confirmed. As is tradition for the series, Japan is getting several heavy collector's editions. The "Special Collection Box" includes a novel-length setting guide, a soundtrack, and an LED art board for 23,100 yen. There is no word yet on whether these physical premiums will make it to Western territories.

This release follows a recent resurgence for the series. Koei Tecmo recently remastered Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water and Mask of the Lunar Eclipse for modern systems. The success of those ports likely paved the way for this higher-budget production.
