Falcom's 45th anniversary acoustic album releases today

Nihon Falcom is scheduled to release Falcom Acoustics 3 on March 9, 2026. The new album celebrates the developer's 45th anniversary with high-resolution acoustic arrangements of classic tracks from their extensive catalog of role-playing games. According to the official announcement, the project aims to recreate the feeling of a live acoustic performance happening right in front of the listener.

Falcom is easily my favorite game developer. I have spent an unreasonable amount of my life playing Ys Book I & II on the TurboGrafx-CD. A huge part of that appeal has always been the music. The company's in-house sound team has been producing some of the best rock and synth soundtracks in the industry since 1981. This third Acoustics album strips away the electric guitars and synthesizers in favor of traditional instruments.

Lilia and Josephine get new arrangements

The tracklist pulls heavily from Falcom's 1980s computer gaming roots. It includes a new version of "LILIA" from 1988's Ys II. That specific track is named after the game's heroine, who famously turns around to look at the player during the game's opening animation. It also includes "Josephine" from the 1987 modular action RPG Sorcerian. Fans of early action role-playing games will also recognize "La Valse Pour Xanadu" from the 1985 PC-8801 classic Dragon Slayer II: Xanadu. That game was a massive hit in Japan and set the template for Falcom's future action titles.

A large ensemble of musicians performed the acoustic tracks. The credits list Kazuhiro Tanizaki on violin, AILING SAI on harp, and Akiko Shibata playing the whistle. Other contributors include saxophonist ADD and trumpeter Kohei Miyoshi.

The album includes a few modern additions as bonus tracks. Listeners get two new versions of "Hoshi no Arika" (Whereabouts of the Stars) from 2004's The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky FC. These specific Japanese and Chinese vocal arrangements were originally recorded for the Falcom jdk BAND LIVE ASIA TOUR 2025.

45 years of action RPGs

Reaching 45 years is a rare milestone for any game studio. Falcom survived the volatile Japanese PC market of the 1980s, the console wars of the 1990s, and the shift to 3D development in the 2000s. They did this by keeping their teams small and focusing on long-running franchises with deep lore. The Trails series alone now spans over a dozen interconnected games. The story moves from the Liberl Kingdom in Trails in the Sky all the way to the Calvard Republic in Kuro no Kiseki II.

Music has always been the connective tissue holding these different eras together. A purely acoustic album is a great way to highlight melodies that were originally composed for limited FM synthesis chips four decades ago.

They could really have gone for the "45" theme and release some 45RPM vinyls.
