Falcom confirms Trails in the Sky the 2nd for 2026, lists support for Switch 2
Nihon Falcom announces a worldwide 2026 release for the full remake of the second Trails chapter, explicitly listing Nintendo's successor console among the platforms.
There are very few constants in the universe, but the relentless march of the Trails series is certainly one of them. Just as we settle into the reality of the first remake, Nihon Falcom has already outlined the next step in its plan to consume several hundred hours of our lives.
As announced by Nihon Falcom, The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 2nd (or Sora no Kiseki the 2nd) is scheduled for a worldwide simultaneous release in 2026. This title serves as a complete remake of the game originally known as Trails in the Sky SC (Second Chapter), which first hit Japanese PCs back in 2006.
Next-Gen Hardware Confirmed
The platform list contains the usual suspects alongside one notable addition. According to the official press release, the game will launch on PlayStation 5, Steam, the current Nintendo Switch, and the "Nintendo Switch 2." While the industry generally dances around the name of Nintendo's next console, Falcom appears comfortable putting it directly in writing for their 2026 roadmap.
This remake continues the story of Estelle and Joshua Bright immediately following the cliffhanger ending of the first game. For those who haven't played the original, we won't spoil it here. We will simply say that the second chapter is generally where the plot goes from "charming adventure" to "political thriller involving ancient civilizations."
Inheriting the System
Falcom states that the 2nd will retain the technical improvements introduced in the remake of the first game. This includes the seamless transition between field exploration and command battles, a system designed to mitigate the sluggish pace often associated with turn-based JRPGs.
"While inheriting the strengths of the previous work, we are fully remaking every element based on the original 'The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC'," the announcement reads. "[This includes] enhanced action that utilizes character individuality and grand story production set across the entire Liberl Kingdom."
The project aims to refine the character models and event scenes further. Given that the original SC is massiveāoften cited by fans as having one of the longest scripts in the franchiseāa full 3D remake is a significant undertaking. The 2026 release window suggests Falcom is giving themselves ample time to adapt the sprawling narrative.
For preservationists and fans, this is a welcome development. The original PC and PSP versions are classics, but they can be difficult for modern audiences to approach due to their age and isometric presentation. Bringing the conclusion of the Liberl arc to modern hardware ensures that Estelle's journey remains accessible without requiring a working PSP or a tolerance for early 2000s PC resolutions.
