Fading Echo just revealed its main villain in a new trailer
Matt Mercer voices Maddock in the latest look at Emeteria's upcoming elemental action game.
Fading Echo has a new trailer introducing its main antagonist, Maddock, ahead of the game's planned release later this year. PlayStation published the footage today, but the action-adventure game is also coming to PC and Xbox Series consoles.
Maddock is voiced by Matt Mercer. He wears glowing purple hexagonal goggles, which is usually a reliable indicator that someone is up to no good. He wants to claim the ether for himself and eliminate anyone standing in his way.
"Little legends in the ether... all that's left will be my name."
Emeteria, a French studio under publisher New Tales, originally announced the project in 2025. The core concept actually started as a tabletop role-playing game designed by the studio's chief creative officer before making the jump to a digital format. The team tried to keep the open-ended problem-solving of a tabletop session intact.
Water and bad decisions
The protagonist, One (voiced by Samantha Béart), uses water-based powers to slide through translucent blue energy tubes and fight large mechanical bosses. The developers call it a desert punk action-adventure. The player can transform into a living sphere of water to navigate the floating islands of Corel. You can slip through cracks, surge through pipes, and crash down from above as a water bomb. The world is slowly being eaten by a corrupting force called the Paradox, which acts as the main catalyst for the collapsing dimensions.
Combat relies entirely on elemental reactions. Players mix water with lava, toxic waste, and Paradox corruption to trigger chain reactions. The goal is to drench, conduct, or solidify enemies based on their specific weaknesses. If you push the physics systems far enough, they will push back. One fights a massive multi-legged mechanical boss covered in neon effects. The game requires players to exploit these weaknesses instead of relying on brute force.
The realities in the game constantly shift. The development team designed the multiverse so that different dimensions rewrite the rules of combat and exploration. A tactic that works in one reality might fail completely in the next. This forces players to adapt their combat strategies on the fly instead of relying on a single combo.
Work in progress
The studio plans to launch it sometime in the third quarter of 2026. The game is strictly a single-player experience without online components, blockchain integration, or microtransactions.
The voice cast pulls heavily from established tabletop and animation talent. Alongside Mercer and Béart, the roster includes Jasmine Bhullar, Laura Bailey, Liam O'Brien, and Sam Riegel.
Fading Echo will launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series consoles, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. It is easy to make a game look fast in pre-release footage. The real test for Emeteria will be whether the elemental chain reactions actually feel systemic in practice, or if they just act as colorful keys for specific enemy locks.
