Escape Academy 2 targets a November 2026 launch
The open-world escape room sequel from Coin Crew Games is heading to PC and Xbox with a new campus hub and a stress-free puzzle mode.
Developer Coin Crew Games and publisher iam8bit are targeting a November 2026 launch window for Escape Academy 2: Back 2 School. The sequel to the 2022 co-op puzzle game is heading to PC and Xbox Series X|S, bringing a massive structural change to how its digital escape rooms work.
The original game dropped players into a series of disconnected, timed puzzle chambers. It worked well enough to pull in over four million players. Coin Crew Games was founded by actual real-world escape room architects, and that physical design experience translated perfectly to a digital format. Now, the studio is expanding the scope.
An entire campus of puzzles
According to the Escape Academy 2 Steam page, the sequel shifts to an open-world format. Instead of just selecting levels from a menu, players explore a sprawling university campus between classes. The hub area hides secret passages, hidden tunnels, and optional side quests called Extra Credit. The core campaign still relies on handcrafted puzzle rooms with absurd hazards like spiked ceilings and massive drops, but the connective tissue is much larger this time around.
The original Escape Academy received heavy post-launch support, including the Escape from Anti-Escape Island and Escape from the Past expansions. That steady drip of content kept the community engaged, but a full sequel allows for engine-level changes that DLC cannot accommodate. The narrative in Back 2 School focuses on a dark mystery surrounding the founding of the academy itself. Players will interact with new teachers and returning characters from the first game to uncover a conspiracy.
No-timer mode and multiplayer
The first game thrived on the stress of a ticking clock. The tension works, but sometimes you just want to figure out how a cipher works without a digital proctor yelling at you. The sequel introduces an optional No-Timer Mode so players can solve things at their own pace.
Multiplayer remains a priority. The game supports both online and local split-screen couch co-op. Composer Doseone, who provided the excellent electronic soundtracks for games like Enter the Gungeon and Sludge Life, is returning to score the sequel. His upbeat style fits the chaotic energy of trying to solve a logic puzzle while the room fills with water.
Game Pass gets it day one
The game was originally revealed during the Day of the Devs showcase in June 2025. The current November 2026 window gives the developers a few more months to polish the open-world mechanics. When it does arrive, it will be available on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, as well as Xbox Series X|S.
Microsoft is also keeping it in the subscription ecosystem, as the game will hit Xbox Game Pass on day one. The day-one Game Pass inclusion is a smart move for a co-op focused game. Finding a partner is much easier when the barrier to entry is just a subscription download rather than a separate purchase. For a genre that relies heavily on communication and shared discovery, minimizing friction at the starting line is a massive advantage.
