Dynasty Warriors 3 remaster shows off its Switch 2 port and new combat mechanics

Koei Tecmo has released a deep-dive overview trailer for Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered, detailing the Nintendo Switch 2 version and a suite of modernized combat features. The game launches on October 1 across all major platforms.

Originally announced last year, the Unreal Engine 5 project combines the 2001 base game and its 2002 Xtreme Legends expansion. Players get mid-combo evading, a Just Evasion counterattack system, and Perfect Power Guards. The new defensive options might actually give you a fighting chance.

Fusing weapons and rewriting history

The remaster introduces a Weapon Fusion system. You can take materials gathered on the battlefield and craft custom gear. The update also adds new hypothetical scenarios to Musou Mode. These include a Wei Legend side story at the Battle of Chibi and a Shu Legend route for the Siege of Hefei Castle. The original split-screen two-player co-op returns intact.

The original 2001 release was a massive hit for developer Omega Force. It was the first entry to introduce True Musou attacks and comprehensive officer growth trees, becoming the franchise's first million-seller. The 2002 Xtreme Legends release established Koei's long-running standalone expansion model, adding new bodyguard customization and Challenge Modes.

Wait, who invited Ziluan?

Koei Tecmo is pulling from its recent successes. Ziluan, the nameless protagonist from 2025's Dynasty Warriors: Origins, joins the roster as a special guest officer. Origins moved over a million copies in its first month. Bringing its lead into the classic PS2-era roster makes commercial sense.

The release coincides with the 25th anniversary of the franchise's shift to crowd combat. Dynasty Warriors 2 launched in 2000, establishing the 1-vs-1000 blueprint. IP Producer Akihiro Suzuki noted that when working on the early PS2 titles, he never imagined the series would reach a quarter-century milestone or surpass 24 million copies sold worldwide.

Pricing and platforms

The game arrives on October 1 for $39.99 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. A $69.99 Digital Deluxe Edition includes 42 fusion weapons, retro costumes, and a digital concept art collection.
