Dotemu has announced that Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War! will launch on March 16, 2026, and a playable demo is available immediately on Steam. The announcement from the French publisher and developer includes a new gameplay trailer and confirms the release window for the title, which leans heavily into the satirical propaganda tone of the 1997 Paul Verhoeven film.

According to the official announcement, the game is set on the "pristine beaches of Zegema Beach," a location familiar to fans of the franchise as the site of a catastrophic defeat for the Federation. The marketing copy stays entirely in character, urging players to "save this Federation-sculpted paradise from the Arachnid menace."

The new trailer showcases the game's action-heavy approach to pest control.

The Dotemu pedigree

The involvement of Dotemu is significant for retro enthusiasts. The company has spent the last decade establishing itself as the premier publisher for reviving dormant arcade franchises. Their track record includes 2020's Streets of Rage 4, which successfully modernized the beat-'em-up genre, and 2022's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge, which sold over a million copies in its first week.

While licensed games have historically been a minefield of low-effort cash grabs, Dotemu's strategy usually involves partnering with developers who have a specific reverence for the source material. For Streets of Rage 4, they worked with Lizardcube and Guard Crush Games to replicate the specific timing and feel of the Sega Genesis originals. With Ultimate Bug War!, the expectation is that the gameplay will prioritize arcade-style responsiveness over the simulation aspects found in other recent adaptations.

A history of violence

The Starship Troopers license has seen a crowded release schedule in recent years. The franchise has bounced between genres, from the squad-based RTS Terran Command to the cooperative first-person shooter Starship Troopers: Extermination. This fragmentation means there is rarely a unified "Starship Troopers experience," but rather a collection of games targeting different niches of the PC gaming market.

Ultimate Bug War! appears to be positioning itself in the action-arcade lane. The press release describes it as the "most realistic portrayal of war that’s ever been made," a claim that is obviously satirical given the franchise's history of over-the-top violence and jingoistic humor. This tone aligns with the original film's critique of fascism, which is often mirrored in the UI and mission briefings of games in the series.

Demo availability and platforms

The demo is currently live on Steam. While Dotemu has a strong history of supporting consoles (most of their library is available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X), the current announcement specifically directs users to the Steam store page. It is common for indie and mid-sized publishers to roll out PC demos first due to the faster certification process compared to console storefronts.

If you plan to check out the demo, expect to see the "white sands of Zegema Beach" before the full deployment lands on March 16. As the Federation propaganda machine puts it, citizenship is guaranteed, though survival usually isn't.
