Game Producer Matthew Cederquist and the team at Blizzard Entertainment have announced that the Warlock class is coming to Diablo II: Resurrected on February 11, 2026. The announcement, made via Xbox Wire, confirms that this will be the first new character archetype added to the game since the Lord of Destruction expansion originally launched in 2001.

The Warlock joins the campfire in 2026.

For a game often treated as a sacred text by action RPG enthusiasts, this is a substantial disruption. Diablo II remained static in terms of character selection for a quarter of a century. The original release in 2000 offered five classes, and the 2001 expansion added the Assassin and Druid. Since then, the meta has been calculated down to the decimal point. Adding a variable like the Warlock isn't just new content. It is a fundamental shift in how the game is played.

Breaking the 2001 meta

According to Cederquist, the Warlock brings a playstyle focused on "summoning, binding, and consuming demons." While the Necromancer already fills the role of the summoner in the Diablo II ecosystem, the Warlock appears to function differently. Where the Necromancer raises the dead to do his bidding, the Warlock seems to operate on a riskier economy of sacrificing summoned entities for power.

The technical implications of this addition are interesting. Diablo II: Resurrected runs on a 3D graphical engine layered over the original 2D logic of the 2000 game. Every frame of animation and hitbox in the remaster has to correspond to the underlying grid-based simulation. Introducing a completely new class means the developers had to build these assets and logic from scratch to fit within an engine architecture that is effectively older than some of the people playing it.

A franchise-wide rollout

The Warlock isn't staying contained to the remaster. Blizzard is synchronizing this release across the entire current franchise. The class will also appear in Diablo IV and the mobile-centric Diablo Immortal around the same time. This suggests a coordinated "Year of the Warlock" strategy rather than a standalone update for the retro title.

It is worth mentioning that while the announcement came via Xbox channels, Diablo II: Resurrected is a multiplatform title available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch. Unless Microsoft (which owns Blizzard) announces a specific exclusivity window, it is safe to assume the Warlock will be available to players on all platforms simultaneously.

Why the wait matters

The Diablo II community is notoriously resistant to change. When Resurrected launched in 2021, developed by Vicarious Visions, the primary selling point was its strict adherence to the original game's quirks, bugs and all. The developers even included a "legacy toggle" to switch back to the original sprite-based graphics on the fly.

Introducing a new class five years after the remaster's launch, and 26 years after the original game, implies that Blizzard is confident enough in the emulation of the original experience to start expanding it. This moves Resurrected from a preservation project into active development territory. It opens the door for other modernizations that purists might view with suspicion, such as new runewords, balance patches, or changes to drop rates.

If you have spent the last two decades perfecting your Hammerdin build, you have until February 2026 to prepare for a new challenger on the ladder.
