Dead or Alive 6 Last Round is out today for current consoles

Team Ninja has released Dead or Alive 6 Last Round. The update brings the 2019 fighting game to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. The launch coincides with the 30th anniversary of the franchise, which began in arcades back in November 1996. The original game made a name for itself running on Sega's Model 2 arcade hardware and competed directly with the Virtua Fighter series. Three decades later, the series is still leaning into its reputation for fast strikes, dangerous arenas, and an endless stream of cosmetic add-ons.

The updated roster

The Last Round package includes 29 playable characters out of the gate. This roster pulls in fighters like Nyotengu, Phase 4, Tamaki, Momiji, and Rachel. Those characters were previously sold separately during the original 2019 release cycle.

The original Dead or Alive 6 launched in March 2019 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. It introduced the Break Gauge system and visible battle damage, though it drew some criticism at the time for its missing online lobbies at launch. This new edition overhauls the game's visuals with a new "OBORO" lighting system, which adds more realistic shadows and skin rendering. These graphical changes apply across several of the series' signature over-the-top stages. During fights, a giant Kraken tentacle attacks the fighters on a shipwreck level, and an aggressive T-Rex disrupts matches in the museum stage.

To take advantage of the visual bump, Team Ninja added a dedicated Photo Mode. Players can now pose characters and adjust sliders for brightness, zoom, and depth of field to set up custom screenshots.

Free-to-play options

Koei Tecmo is continuing its established release strategy by launching a free-to-play "Core Fighters" version alongside the paid game. The free version includes Kasumi, Marie Rose, Honoka, and NiCO right from the start. Players can buy additional characters, extra costumes, or story mode access piecemeal from the digital storefronts.

The launch also adds five new costumes for the game's most popular heroines. These outfits pull designs from other Team Ninja properties, including Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge and the spin-off title Dead or Alive Xtreme Venus Vacation. Both the standard and free-to-play versions of the game are available exclusively as digital downloads.

Summer additions

A brief teaser at the end of the announcement revealed Minato, a brand-new character scheduled to arrive later this summer. Minato currently appears only as a silhouette against a grid background. The actual character design remains under wraps for now.

Team Ninja has used the "Last Round" naming convention before, most notably to wrap up the Dead or Alive 5 generation with a complete bundle. The original Dead or Alive 6 had a notoriously massive list of downloadable content on PC and consoles, with hundreds of individual costume purchases. Bundling the core roster into a native application for current hardware gives players an easier jumping-on point. I am curious to see if the studio plans to roll out another long cycle of costume packs for this new edition, or if Minato is actually the final piece of the puzzle.
