Dead or Alive 6 is getting a Last Round edition this Jiggle, I mean June!
Team Ninja is bringing its 2019 fighting game to current-gen consoles with a new lighting engine, a free-to-play version, and SNK guest characters.
Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja are releasing Dead or Alive 6 Last Round on June 25 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. The 3D fighting game originally launched in 2019 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Support for the base game ended abruptly in April 2020. Now the developers are bringing it to current-generation hardware with an engine upgrade and a major crossover with SNK's The King of Fighters XIV.
The new release runs on the Katana Engine. This is Team Ninja's proprietary technology used recently in action games like Rise of the Ronin. For Last Round, the studio built a new lighting system called OBORO. The updated engine provides better visual fidelity and shadow detail than the 2019 release. Naturally, a huge chunk of that modern PlayStation 5 GPU processing power is going straight into calculating the series' trademark jiggle physics. The fans on your PS5 will be working overtime.
Guest fighters from SNK
The Last Round package heavily promotes a collaboration with The King of Fighters XIV. Mai Shiranui and Kula Diamond join the roster as playable guest characters. Both SNK fighters previously appeared as paid add-ons during the original game's short lifespan. Mai is a long-time veteran of both Fatal Fury and King of Fighters. Kula is the ice-wielding combatant who first appeared in King of Fighters 2000.
This new DLC drop includes their character licenses and five debut costumes each. Players who pre-order the game digitally also get an "Angelic Maid" costume for Marie Rose. The crossover extends to the environments. The updated Lost Paradise stage is built specifically to showcase the new OBORO lighting system.
The free version returns
Koei Tecmo is bringing back its free-to-play model alongside the paid release. Dead or Alive 6 Last Round Core Fighters launches on the exact same day. This version gives players access to four characters without buying the full game. The rotating roster starts with Kasumi, Marie Rose, Honoka, and NiCO.
The Core Fighters model worked exceptionally well for Dead or Alive 5. It lets curious players try the strike-and-hold triangle mechanics before buying individual fighters or story chapters. The original Dead or Alive 6 had a similar free version that kept the online lobbies populated. Fighting games live and die by their player counts. Removing the entry fee entirely is the easiest way to guarantee matches on day one.
Team Ninja's fighting game franchise has a long history of massive re-releases. Dead or Alive 5 received its own Last Round update in 2015. That release bundled years of downloadable content and added new stages to bridge the gap between console generations. This 2026 update for the sixth game follows the exact same playbook.
The original Dead or Alive 6 had a rough post-launch period. The publisher faced heavy criticism for charging real money just to change a character's hair color. Support shut down barely a year after launch. A native current-generation port with a free entry tier gives Team Ninja a clean slate to rebuild the player base.
