D&D is bringing back Greyhawk with a new Icons product line
Wizards of the Coast used its Gen Con keynote to announce the return of Gary Gygax's original setting and a slate of massive crossovers.
Wizards of the Coast announced the return of the World of Greyhawk and a new D&D Icons product line at Gen Con 2026. The publisher used its D&D Vision Keynote 2027 to lay out a massive roadmap of upcoming releases.
Head of D&D Dan Ayoub opened the presentation with a promise to make Gen Con the annual home for D&D roadmap reveals. He framed the upcoming slate around bringing players back to local hobby stores and focusing on the core tabletop experience. The crowd was receptive. That doesn't mean they're ignoring digital platforms, but the focus is clearly on physical books.
The return of Greyhawk
The centerpiece of the presentation was the introduction of D&D Icons. Actor and new Chief Creative Officer of D&D Icons Joe Manganiello took the stage to outline the initiative. The goal is to bridge modern 5th Edition play with Gary Gygax's foundational work that was interrupted in 1985.
Manganiello brought Gary's son Luke Gygax out to announce the official return of the World of Greyhawk. The original fantasy setting is coming back to 5th Edition with a new adventure book called Greyhawk: Crown of the Witch Queen. Luke Gygax is curating the project. He is utilizing his father's unfinished material to build out the lore.
Crossovers and classic settings
The keynote did not stop at Greyhawk. The roadmap includes the return of other dormant settings like Dark Sun and Dragonlance. Wizards of the Coast is also leaning heavily into third-party collaborations. A World of Warcraft crossover is on the schedule, along with a surprise Star Wars collaboration.
It's a huge slate of content. Ayoub stated his goal was to reunite the player base after 52 years of D&D history. We'll see how 5th Edition mechanics handle lightsabers alongside classic Greyhawk dungeons when the Icons line starts rolling out next year.
